Tranya is a drink first seen in the Star Trek: TOS episode, "The Corbomite Maneuver."

In the script, it isn't described, but it it is shown in a scene to be a an orangish-pinkish drink.

The liquid used for the scene, according to William Shatner, was "warm, food-colored apricot juice." [1]

Tranya was also mentioned/seen in other Trek franchise shows.

It is unknown if the canon drink was alcoholic.

In 1969, it was described in the Star Trek Concordance as:

A beverage used by Balok's people; apparently quite palatable to Terrans. He served some to Kirk, McCoy and Bailey." [2]

Tranya and Fandom

Some Early Mentions of Tranya in Fiction

[1976]:

McCoy punched the code of his cabinet, poured a brandy for the Captain, then nobly measured out a small tranya for himself. The instructions M'Benga had issued with his last prescription had been apologetic but firm. "Mud in your eye." [3]

[1980]:

Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes had just finished a quiet late dinner in their quarters on Memory Alpha, after a tiring day of study and work. After taking their tine over the food and tranya they sat in the twilight contemplating the darkened grounds of Meditation Garden five levels below. From somewhere came the sharp pip-pip of a Vulcan sparrow and the gentle splashing of the fountain. [4]

[1989]:

The Vulcan punched up an order on the servo-unit and brought two glasses filled with a golden liquor back to the desk. "Tranya," he announced proudly, knowing how much Kirk liked the special drink. [5]

Other Early Mentions of Tranya

In 1974, a newsletter The Tranya Times was named for the beverage.

In 1989, a fan sent out this submission request for a proposed zine that didn't make it off the ground: "Still breathing in minds and typewriters throughout fandom; this vintage (we hope to uncork in early 1990) will be subtle yet pleasing, full- flavored and rich. Send us your submissions of the unusual or the, usual, with a twist!" [6]

As an Alcoholic Beverage

"I am not sure. I woke, on the floor, of a cabin not my own. I can not recall how I came to be there."

"Many's the time that's happened to me! You're lucky - or maybe unlucky you woke up alone! It was the Tranya, Mr. Spock, I don't know what hap pened, but the miniscule alcoholic content, and maybe some other unknown ingredient combined with your green blood and zowwy!" [7]

Leonard McCoy went to find him, himself feeling the effects of mixing Finnegan's Folly with a glass of Tranya. [8]

Taroh spoke from her cross-legged position on top of her desk. A ruby-crystal glass was clasped in one hand, a bottle of tranya in theother. Various bottles were beside other crewmemebers. The spontaneous ENTERPRISE parties had always been bring-your-own-bottle affairs. For those who preferred their drinks plain, food services decanters were in evidence. [9]

Included in Menus

The banquet was especially enjoyable, with a menu that kept everyone guessing. It included Tranya, Disdain ofKzin, Giant Eel Bird....roasted and stuffed with tribbles, Kaferian Apple Jelly, Baked Potato and Sour Cream, Puree des Ploomeeks au Beurre, Romulan Dessertcake and Terran Ice Cream. [10]

I got there on Thursday, Ruth and Judith were throwing a K/S Circle party. It spoke my language. The food was great. May I say that Judith is the Martha Stewart of Star Trek and K/S food. The tranya was so good, it put hair on your chest. The array of logs and balls. You name it, it was there. I never seen so many food wrapped and rolled all at the same place. The clear blue Romulan ale, was smokin'. It was definitely a feast for the palettes.[11]

Other Mentions

You could understand the gist and give an A for effort, but it wasn't the fine taste of Tranya we were hoping for. It was more like Jolt Cola. This original "Lost Episode" was aired a few times on our show, but was never heard elsewhere. [12]

Tranya and K/S Fans

K/S fans were especially enthusiastic about drinking tranya as a way to connect to their fandom and other fans

As a Way to Show Love

There is much to discuss, but first...the tranya! I continue to be amazed by this beautiful diverse group of women. Diversity in the most delightful combinations. It really is so beautiful. [13]

So I raise my cup of Tranya to all my K/S sisters—unashamedly, I love you all! [14]

Used By K/S Fans As a Way of Referring to Fanwork Preferences

"Tranya" is substituted for tea in the common fannish phrase, "Not my cup of tea."

ARCHIVES III is a Star Trek reprint zine which skims the cream off other publications and throws in some original material, too. If you're an art fan, ARCHIVES is not going to be your cup of tranya, but if you like extremely well written stories, go for it! [15]

I realize that since the zine had stories with Spock/McCoy, and Uhura/Saavik among others, one couldn't really call it K/S but there was at least on K/S/M story. While menage stories might not be my cup of tranya, someone may wish to nominate it. [16]

This story will not be everyone's cup of tranya, but if pleases me no end that there is a place in our K/S family where we can stretch our literary wings, where we can explore all aspects of Kirk and Spock, and sexuality - our own or that of others, that there are special people like Kathy with the talent and courage to do it. To paraphrase, if not here, then where? [17]

K/S print fandom has become so respectable and bourgeoisified that it seems to have little edge left. K/S printfen are not the underground any more, they are the mainstream, the nice straight housewives. So the freewheeling diversity and gender-bending of the net culture is not necessarily the printfan's cup of tranya. [18]

As an Accompaniment to Reading "The K/S Press"

"Tranya" is mentioned in The K/S Press as an accompaniment to reading the letterzine. These mentions ceased at the end of 2005.

So go get a cup of coffee (or tea or fruit juice or Tranya) and light a cigarette (or a joint or incense) and sit on the sofa (or bed or carpet) and have your cat (or dog or Gorn) in your lap and enjoy this latest effort of ours brought to you with love for all things K/S." [19]

So run to the fridge for some Temptation Mousse and grab your glass of Tranya (straight up, with a twist) and read yet another extravagant issue of your K/S PRESS. [20]

We wish all our K/S sisters (and yes! brothers) the happiest and most wonderful of holidays. So sit in front of the fireplace, drink your hot, spiced Tranya Cider and read your Holiday Issue of The K/S Press." [21]

So recline outside in the shade (this is a no-sun zone); sip a frosty Tranya latte (is the Tranya-funny getting stale yet?); listen to the dulcet (love that word, too) tones of the water fountain; and read this 7th anniversary issue of The K/S Press. [22]

So sit back on your soft pillows by the fireplace;; sip your hot chocolate laced with a splash of Tranya;; dream of Kirk and Spock making love by the fire;; and read this end-of-the-year issue of The K/S Press." [23]
