Toothless is a Night Fury in the films, and is, according to Valka, the same age as Hiccup, his rider and best friend. He is missing his left tailfin, an injury from when Hiccup, at the beginning of the first film shoots him out of the sky using a bola cannon. Toothless has obviously forgiven Hiccup for this by the second film, but it is still a sore point for the both of them. Hiccup replaced the tailfin with a mechanical prosthetic that he can control while in flight. In Gift of the Night Fury, Hiccup makes Toothless a tail that Toothless himself could control, but Toothless later rejected it in favor of the tail Hiccup could control. Toothless and Hiccup seem to speak to each other through some kind of sixth sense, as well as through Toothless's human-like actions-- Toothless even seems to speak at times!
