From the editorial by Wismer:

Welcome to the fourth issue of TIME LOG. With this issue, TIME LOG is really breaking some national ground at last. Me have submission from as far as New York City, Florida, and Houston. Plus, this is our largest issue yet.

[...]

I'd like to apologize for the lack of "Who's Happening", our convention calendar. We, as usual, are running down to the wire in trying to get this issue out, and because of the frantic pace of activities during the past few weeks were simply unable to get the information together to run the calendar.

Any mistakes or bad corrections, smudges, etc., that are present within this fanzine are entirely the result of simply not having enough time or people to do a very thorough job of running the zine. We recently got involved with some new printing equipment and have had so much trouble with it that several of us will be checking into the local hospital after Panopticon for psychiatric treatment.

Many of the Companions of Dr. Who have spent days without sleep trying to get this zine into your hands for Panoptican. And it's still up in the air whether or not we will be successful. So if you get it there in Chicago, remember that it's not just a fanzine you're reading — it's blood, sweat and lots of hair-tearing.

The next issue of TIME LOG will be edited by the Gulf Coast chapter of the Companions of Dr. Who. We've already got material for it and the Gulf Coast bunch are hot at work. But there is always room for more.

One column that you haven't seen within TIME LOG is a Letters of Criticism (LoC) column where fans can express their delight (or lack thereof) of what we print. The reason is that we don't get too mail letters. So this is a plea for those of you out there to put your two cents in. If you like us, tell us; if not, let us know.

To close: I'd like to dedicate this issue to us — the people that put the time and effort into printing TIME LOG. Believe me, we deserve it.

From the editorial by Duval:

You have to be a little crazy to want to write or illustrate for a fanzine'. Certainly the more sensible fans out there will agree that throwing oneself into such maddening work is a silly waste of time. "Why bother?" they might say. "Why try to expand on something that is perfectly fine the way it is, in the context of its own universe?"

There are many artists and writers here on Sol III (Heaven help me, I'm one!) of varied degrees of talent, various strong viewpoints, an infinite variety of artistic expressions--and each of us has taken on the nearly impossible task of trying to capture a special world with all its fun, its magic, its frequent horrors, and its occasional moments of beauty. And even more insane, we have attempted to put the Doctor down on two-dimensional paper! It is no easy Job to capture a creature that perfectly, and miraculously, takes the elements of a laser beam and a rainbow and combines them together in a form somewhat resembling a human being.

It is perfectly true that most of us are not quite content to leave things as they are. We seem to have an overpowering urge to expand on this universe: analyze it, develop it, patch up holes, polish off corners, sew up threads left long untied. In this way, we project our selves into this fantasy world and make it ours in a special, personal way.

Artists and writers who devote any sizeable portion of their work to a single fantasy universe are in love -- in love with an ideal and a dream that has somehow touched the chords of our hearts and the frontiers of our imaginations.

It's a story that is only a small part of a large and ambitious series of tales involving the Doctor in his fourth incarnation and two girl companions from the United States, circa 1980s. What Stewart and Johnston have attempted in this series is a unique experiment--that is, put themselves into their own universe with the Doctor. It could be argued that that is what every writer does. When you write, like it or not, elements of your own personality end up in your characters. But Stewart and Johnston have done it literally, and that makes for interesting reading.") (46)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 10

Overall, this is a superior zine, its flaws mostly minor and of the type which indicate talented people are in charge... If you've never bought a 'Time Log' before, start with this one. Its flaws are of the type which indicate talented people are in charge, thus leaning there is always a chance anything done by them will only get better and better. I never pick on writers/artists with no promise, so before anyone gets offended, take refuge in that fact. This zine even looks good, from the four color cover on through. The editor, Carol Walker, has the best stable of artists ever to work from, the Companions of Doctor Who's 1000 plus membership. The vello binding i still intact, however, it looks classy. The biggest problem in the technical side is the silly printed offset, compounded by occasional over-reducton in some stories (and I personally like the type to be of all one size throughout the zine)... oh, niggle, niggle. Just break out the specs - it's worth it. The first effort is based on a spurious premise, that Tom Baker is less than pleased to meet his fans or perhaps he has simply reached a surfeit of them, and is ready to climb the wall, or hop a TARDIS to get away from the little monsters. Whatever, all Tom fans know this isn't so. Given that, judging the piece on its own merit finds it a predictable entry. The idea of Tom meeting HIS Doctor has been done--even in TIME LOG- and better. 'Carousel' the next story, begins awkwardly and the author should take the characters she's introduced and surgically remove them from the DW universe--they cause the yarn to lose the ambiance of the show--and give them the story of their own that they deserve. But even though this is a DW story, and charged therefore with holding the flavor of the show, "Carousel" is still a whacking good yarn. NOW. Put on your sunglasses and read a brilliant (if brief) bit called "All that Blisters"- best in the zine. The Doctor (with Sarah) go on a jaunt which is BBC worthy, complete with cliffhangers. Fun stuff! The rest of the ish is spiced with puzzles, funny, well drawn cartoons, poems, an article or two, filksongs and some unclassifiable bits and ends. The best of the poems is "Eye Made This Scarf" a concrete poem by Nancy Strattan, though I also liked Linda Mallory's "Doctor Tom" which muses on Doctor 4's regeneration to his fifth body. If you've never bought a TIME L0G before, start with this one. You'll kick yourself for missing back issues. [1]
