Tarkin calls them a religion, Yoda's comments are that they lean towards the philosophical, and Ben says that they were the guardians of freedom and justice in the Old Republic. But what were they? How did they use the Force? (What is the Force?) What made them able to use the Force? What made a Jedi as, supposedly, opposed to a Dark Lord, and what led to their fall?"
