The Tax Shelter Challenge was a short story challenge created by Speranza in January 2003. The challenge was somewhat in the spirit of (though much smaller than) the Canadian Shack challenge. It was answered by 15 writers, and the stories were posted as a kind of daily calendar, a countdown to April 15, which is Tax Day in the United States.

Speranza described it as "A multi-fandom calendar featuring the work of Basingstoke, Destina, Gearbox, julad, Justine, Kass, Laura Shapiro, Lucy, astolat, & Speranza." Fandoms included due South, The Sentinel, Batman, Gladiator, Smallville, Brimstone, West Wing, Stargate SG-1, Magnificent Seven, and Discworld.

Others wrote their own tax shelters inspired by the challenge, among them Bethbethbeth.[1]
