Talk:Sex Position
The name of this page is somewhat misleading as it is only about topping vs. bottoming, rather than any and all ways of positioning oneself during sex or individual named sex acts. See Wikipedia. The only alternative I can think of is Top vs. Bottom.--aethel (talk) 03:06, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- Strongly +1 the Top/Bottom Dynamics redirect is helpful, because we definitely do need a page talking about that (to direct n00bs like me to), but this page at first glance sounds like it's just about penetrative sex, and the top/bottom thing is much more broadly applicable to fanworks that don't include any sex at all. I would be in favor of either moving the page (along with a revamp of the page organization to make it clear that it's talking about both), or else splitting out t/b into its own page. -- Quaelegit (talk) 21:37, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Page reorganization and revamp
So, as best as I've been able to tell with a moderately thorough search, this is currently the best page on fanlore for explaining Top/Bottom discourse. There are also the glossary pages (top and seme and bottom and uke) -- both those specifically cover one side of it (and more specifically English language fandom vs. Japanese language -- or at least weeb -- fandom. Which, tangent, but these terms probably have equivalents in other languages right?? We should record those if people can find them). I just want one link to point pages to to explain the full picture.
However, this page looks at first glance like it's mostly about, well, Sex Position. It does cover the personality tropes and fandom splits if you read down, but if I link someone here to explain "why did this post of two genshin characters waving a flag ask people not to tag it #Zhongchi" they will think i linked them to the wrong page.
So, two options: either revamp the page to foreground the expanded scope, or split off the broader top/bottom thing into its own page. I could go either way, but if we are revamping the page here's the changes I think we need:
- definitely rename the page as Aethel asked further up this talk page (actually, I'd like to move it to the existing redirect Top/Bottom Dynamics)
- Expand the lede!!
- Rework the (already pretty in depth) discussion of how Top and Bottom work to be less... sex-centered, I guess? Like the conversation in Discord (link) made it clear that for a lot of fans sex isn't the primary factor (or maybe even a factor at all) in how they understand and use this paradigm. To be clear I don't want to cut the sex discussion!! More just, expand discussion of the non-sex personality and narrative role stuff, in a way that isn't foregrounding sex acts, to address the usage by these other fans.
- This might mean re-organizing the page sections but I don't have a concrete proposal right now
What do people think? I would appreciate feedback/help with this, I'm pretty new to this whole concept and still a little confused probably. -- Quaelegit (talk) 22:05, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Ship Naming conventions
Also, speaking of how I am a n00b about this whole thing, I tried writing up an explanation of the name order conventions for (mostly East Asian, afaik?) fandoms that make a convention of indicating t/b dynamics with ship names. I feel like I didn't do a great job and would appreciate more people looking voer and improving it! (Also, do you think I put it in the right place on teh page, or should it go somewhere else? Currently I have it in the Top/Bottom section, under the subsections explaining top, bottom, and versatile.) Thank you! -- Quaelegit (talk) 22:11, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
