Is this an Americentric observation?
The sentence, "Contrary to popular belief, liberalism is generally considered to be a centre ideology in much of the world," makes no sense on the face of it.
If this is "popular belief" BUT much of the world doesn't hold it, then it's not actually a popular belief—unless it is only widespread in a limited geographical area. Where? (The US?) Either the locality should be specified or the sentence reworded. --Greer Watson (talk) 21:41, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
- I see this passage has now been amended to "Contrary to the term's mainstream usage in much of the Western world, liberalism is generally considered to be a centre ideology in much of the world." In Canada, the mainstream use of liberalism puts it as a centre ideology. How about Europe? Australia? Just what is considered to be the scope of "much of the Western world" in this passage? --Greer Watson (talk) 00:41, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Honestly I've always read this page as written from a US/North American perspective. (I could be wrong but that's what it feels like to someone who knows very little about North America) I had to google liberalism, because it is not a word that is generally used in my small part of the world, and I still don't know what editors on this page consider its mainstream usage to be. I think a definition of what this page considers left-wing/liberal politics is needed to answer your question. And a summary of its mainstream usage would also be helpful. -Auntags (talk) 23:56, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- I have only skimmed the page but one thing that strikes me (and that may be helpful to address to ward off future debates about what exactly the scope of this page is) is that this is a very very broad page subject. Possibly impractically so. Is this page going to document every single instance of leftism in canon (where it impacts upon the fandom) and fandom throughout all of time? We'll be here forever. And that's assuming that people can agree on what exactly "leftism" consists of. I see some references to anti-capitalist memes and canons, and that strikes me as the kind of page topic that would be more concrete - anti-capitalist and fandom. Media analysis and fandom through a leftist lens could be another page subject on its own. But Leftism in Fandom... I just think the inevitable result of this page will be that it's very patchy because the topic is so broad that it's near impossible to tackle in a comprehensive fashion. --enchantedsleeper (talk) 14:47, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Main editor for this page here, and I'll be sure to post a reply when I can, I just don't have the spoons for it atm -- OfMonstersAndWerewolves (talk) 18:03, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Of course. I wasn't necessarily intending the questions to be directed at one person to come up with definitive answers to, but more broad thoughts to consider about this page. One thing I have noticed now I've read to the bottom of the page is that we already have some more narrowly-focused pages in line with what I was suggesting, namely Marxism in Fandom and Anarchism in Fandom, which I think is good. --enchantedsleeper (talk) 01:02, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
