organization and function

Should this be a disamig page with a header and then a lot of links to other major categories of fandoms, such as Comics Fandom, Media Fandom, Band Fandom, RPF Fandom, etc? Oh, and maybe someone could do a venn diagram of that. --rache 18:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

That's a great idea. At the moment, it really doesn't work.--Sherrold 18:54, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
I sort of split the difference between this idea and the original page; I figured it still needed some sort of explanation of the term "fandom" and how it applies to things on Fanlore. But I definitely agree that the other kinds of fandom need to be linked and explained on their own pages, without trying to actually explain all the variations here, so I made a more disambig-y list for that. --Arduinna 00:00, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure where to put this interesting link to an outline of the history of fandom in the 1960s. accessed December 18, 2009 User:Mrs. Potato Head|Mrs. Potato Head]] 00:35, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

definition problem

Something is wrong with the first sentence, but I don't know how to phrase it better.

  • There is a difference between a fandom and Fandom
  • There is a separate page for Fannish Community, but it's not clear from the definition here what the distinction is
  • Fandom could mean all fans of a thing taken as a group, whether they actually interact or not

I like this definition from Elizabeth Bear: Fandom is an emergent property of a large group of fans. Nobody planned it. Nobody guided it. It just happened.[1]--aethel (talk) 01:40, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Link Removal

I took out JoyBot05's random insertion to an exterior article, and moved it to the Timeline of Fandom Meta. --MPH (talk) 12:50, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Fandom No Longer Primarily SFF

The first two paragraphs present Fandom as part of the SFF world, but that no longer seems true. Who uses "fanac" now? And where are the super-intense Sherlock Holmes fans? And Beatles fans? X-Files fanfic pioneers?

The comments above are very true. I think fanlore readers deserve a more general explanation, but am not feeling like I could write one myself. Maybe one of the group fanlore discussions could tackle it? --msilverstar (talk) 03:10, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

msilverstar I edited the beginning of the page and organized the sff part in its own section and modified the location of the fandom types to make it clear that there is not just sff or sf in fandom I think this is a small start in resolving things, right? -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 22:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
I think it's good, makes room for more of fandom as a concept. --msilverstar (talk) 22:38, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
