Fusions with Sherlock began being produced when it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast as Smaug in The Hobbit films alongside Martin Freeman, who also stars in Sherlock. The portmanteau name 'Johnbo' is sometimes used to refer to the John Watson/Bilbo fusion character. Bilbo/Smaug fanfiction also started appearing as early as 2011.[1]

Hm, maybe the specific portmanteau Johnbo isn't used so often? At least on AO3, there are only 5 search results. But "Smauglock" also turns up. On A03 I found 26 Hobbit/Holmes crossovers (first one published 1 May 2011)

and 4 Bilbo/Smaug stories (first published 9 Jul 2011).--æþel (talk) 23:41, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I added a heavily-edited version of the paragraph back in. I am assuming the problem was that having only a niche crossover interest listed as fanac for the film looked strange. Activity on the tumblr tag suggests not everyone likes Sherlock crossovers. :)--æþel (talk) 17:12, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
