The Mummy is a 1999 American fantasy adventure film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz that spawned two direct sequels, an animated series, and a spin-off series, The Scorpion King, which led to their own three direct sequels.

It is part of a media franchise[1] based on films by Universal Pictures started in 1932, about a mummified ancient Egyptian priest who is accidentally resurrected, bringing with him a powerful curse, and the ensuing efforts of heroic archaeologists to stop him. The franchise was created by Nina Wilcox Putnam and Richard Schayer.

As part of this franchise, in 2017 a reboot under the same name was released casting Tom Cruise in the lead role.[2]

Canon History

The Mummy

Is 1926, Rick O'Connell, FFL Colonel (formerly) is saved from death by Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan, leave together to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, where they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers. What Evelyn, her brother Jonathan and Rick are unaware of is that another group of explorers are interested in the same dig, just like a Medjai warrior and his people who have long guarded the mysteries of the desert sands. Unfortunately for everyone, this group ends up unleashing a curse which been laid on the dead High Priest Imhotep. Now 'The Mummy' is awake and it's going to take a lot more than guns to send him back to where he came from.

The Mummy Returns

1933, Rick and Evelyn O'Connell are still discovering new artifacts, now along with their 8 year old son Alex O'Connell. Yours recent discover is the Bracelet of Anubis, which by accident ends up in Alex's arm, without prerogatives that he will leave there, he is stuck, trapped by magic. But someone else is after the bracelet. Alex is kidnapped and taken straight to Egypt, as the bracelet has the power to wake up and control the Army of Anubis, the Scorpion King's army. With the help of the medjai Ardeth Bay again, Rick, Evie and Jonathan must run as the High Priest Imhotep has been brought back from the dead once again with the help of reincarnated Anck-Su-Namun the young Meela Nais, in search of bracelet and your power.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

1946, a now adult Alex O'Connell and his archaeology professor Roger Wilson locate the Emperor's tomb. Though attacked by a mysterious woman, they bring the sarcophagus to Shanghai. The British government entrusts the O'Connells to take the Eye of Shangri-La gemstone - which was also found in this excavation - back to China. Jonathan, Rick, Evie and Alex with help of mysterious mother-daughter duo must destroy the Dragon Emperor mummy before he can resurrect his army and rule the world.
