Something That Has Never Been is a het Beauty and the Beast (TV) anthology with fiction by Barbara Hill.

From an ad in the June 1990 Tunneltalk: "Contains a sequel to "The Rest is Silence" that has a happy ending."

Fan Reaction to a Story

At least one of the stories in these zines prompted Barbara Hill to comment on the reactions of several fans. In the editorial to Where Dreams Are Born [1], Hill wrote:

On particular story in another of my zines resulted in a couple of letters which raised questions in regards to certain plots that asked the reader to expand their beliefs in what could or couldn't be possible. I understand how they feel -- I've read a few stories like that myself.

Issue 1

Something That Has Never Been 1 was published in May 1990, contains 124 pages and the fiction is all by Barbara Hill.

It is illustrated by clip art.

The zine includes seven classic short stories by Hill that concentrate on Vincent and Catherine's relationship. Includes an alternate ending to "Attack of the Sea God" by Sharon Wells, printed in The Book of Secrets 2, and a sequel to "And the Rest is Silence."

It has been posted online as a PDF here.

I have been a Beauty and the Beast fan from day one. I'm one of those fans who firmly believe that they should have showed Catherine and Vincent realizing the full potential of their relationship. In a tasteful manner of course. I don't care what anyone says about Vincent's origins. No normal, red-blooded woman would be able to keep her hands off that gorgeous hunk for over two years.

A certain nameless someone who lives with me and calls me mom likes to tease me and says my stories are rated R. Of course she is still in shock to discover that I have "those" kind of thoughts. (I'd like to know how she thinks she came to be.) I agree with her, though. My stories could be rated R - for ROMANTIC. Actually they would be rated PG - PG 13.

My stories are like they are because I firmly believe that "SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER BEEN," should be. And because whether he realizes it or not, Ron Perlman has created what I think is one of the sexiest characters to ever grace television. Vincent is loving proof (fantasy proof?) that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I agree wholeheartedly with another fan who once wrote, "I'd kiss that furry little face in a minute."

Aside from all his physical attributes, Mr. Perlman has infused Vincent with a sense of loyalty, compassion, gentleness and love. What's not to like? Vincent has all the makings of every woman's fantasy. And of course there is also that sense of danger. Forbidden fruit so to speak.

I never could resist blue eyes in a man. I've been in love with Paul Newman since I was a teenager. I was mad for Remington Steele for four years, and still am thanks to my tapes. And I absolutely flipped over E.T. How about that voice? I haven't melted like this at the sound of a voice since the first time I watched James Mason in "A Star is Born."

  • Passions Discovered, fiction (an alternate ending to "Attack of the Sea God," a story in The Book of Secrets #2) (2)
  • Something That Has Never Been (Vincent with amnesia) (14)

  • Why Do I Like Beauty and the Beast, essay (54)
  • After the Madness (Vincent's illness, sequel to "The Rest is Silence, written June 1989) (58)

  • Key Witness (witness protection program) (86)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

Delicate, romantic short stories concentrating on Vincent and Catherine's relationship, best if read in small doses to appreciate each story. Well worth the contemplation.[2]

This zine is a collection of stories centering on the growing relationship between Catherine and Vincent. Each story ends with their relationship being consummated. Stories range from a continuation of 'Attack of the Sea God,' from The Book of Secrets 2. to a sequel to 'TRIS.' In one story, Catherine even finds a way to take Vincent on his first plane ride. [3]

Something That Has Never Been 2 (The Fairy Tale Continues) was published in November 1990 and contains 170 pages.

It was edited by Barbara Hill, Becky Bain, Pat Leslie, Marie Sexton.

The art is by Pat Leslie, Ina Brown, Janine Wills; cover by Ko Wicke.

All of the Classic short stories are by Barbara Hill and the poetry is by Janet Doctors and Pat Leslie.

One story, "Love's Unrest: A Time for Good-Byes," was optional when zine was in print: it contains 3rd season material and Diana as a helper. Purchasers specified whether they wanted this story included or not. The description from a flyer:

Catherine's spirit is unable to rest after her untimely death. Not having the chance to say her good-byes, she is given permission to return to the tunnels to do so. But there is another reason she so desperately wants to return. The place she resides in since her death affords occasional glimpses into the future of those she loved and what she sees in Vincent's future she does not like. As stubborn in death as she was in life, Catherine is determined to change the future for her beloved and give him his happy life. Diana is strictly a helper. No other love interest• This "ghost" story has no physical relationship between our lovers. Catherine cannot be seen by anyone. There is a happy ending epilogue.

This story was written very shortly after "Walk Slowly" and long before the end of "That" season. For me it was a catharsis of sorts and as painful as writing it was (and believe me it. was!) I had to finish it. Since then I have decided ho more 3rd season stories for me. I will write only Vincent with his Catherine living happily and loving each other the way they were meant to be.

  • The Lovers, poem by Pat Leslie (inside front cover)
  • The Journal ("While sorting through her father's belongings, Catherine finds a trunk that belonged to her mother. A trunk full of startling surprises. Her mother was a helper/") (1)
  • Anticipation, poem by Janet Doctors (45)
  • These Hands Are Mine ("A letter from Lisa causes a rift between Vincent and Father and sends Vincent to find solace and comfort from the most important person in his life.") (46)
  • The Waiting, poem by Janet Doctors (69)
  • Samantha Remembers (Titled "Samantha's Story" on a flyer. "A grown woman now, awaiting the birth of her first child, reminisces about her about her true life hero Vincent and his Catherine.") (70)
  • Why?, part 2 (78)
  • Jacob's Lullaby, poem by Janet Doctors (80)
  • Love's Return ("It's two months since Vincent has brought his son to live Below. Life is as back to normal as it can be. He is settling down trying to accept a life that will never include his Catherine again. Or so he thinks. This story is my way of righting what I considered a terrible wrong. Like a lot of fans9 I simply could not accept the death of Catherine. Especially the way it was done. This story gave me a way of once more believing that once upon a time. ..is still now.") (81)
  • All the Juicy Details ("Edie's surprise visit to Catherine turns into more of a surprise for Edie herself when she finds her friend happily married and very pregnant.") (109)
  • Love's Unrest: A Time for Goodbyes (130)
  • Lots of Good Reading - Zines (152)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2

Inez Brown's artwork is a standout. Artwork is unnumbered. Wonderfully sweet Classic short stories by Hill, poetry by Janet Doctors and Pat Leslie. Art by Leslie, Brown, Janine Wills; cover by Ko Wicke. One story, “Love's Unrest,” is optional: it contains 3rd season material and Diana as a helper. Specify whether you want it or not. [4]

A mixture of Classic stories with several set in the 3rd season time frame. One is a SND story line; the other has Catherine's spirit unable to rest because she's upset over the future she sees for Vincent, paving the way for her return. Other stories include: Catherine finds out her mother was a helper; a letter from Lisa upsets Vincent; and more. [5]
