Scars are a popular trope in both canon and fanon works. In some instances, they are portrayed positively as tokens of heroism and valour, or as evidence of resilience and survival. Negative portrayals present them as mere disfigurement or indications of unlovability and/or moral weakness.
The touching of a character's scars is a common scenario in fanworks involving body worship or body horror. Scarification is a less-common form of body modification that sometimes features in both canon and fanworks.
Top surgery scars sometimes feature in fannish depictions of transmasculine characters. This includes both canonical trans men and characters headcanoned as trans men by fans.
