STARLink is a gen letterzine covering all things Star Trek, but with an emphasis during its run on classic Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It ran for 35 issues (plus one preview issue) - although some of these were double issues.

It was a successor to Interstat, alongside Diachron and Engage, lasting longer than either of those two and eventually absorbing and including some of the columnists and features of both of those letterzines.

Issue 35

STARLink 35 was published in August/September 1994 and contains 35 pages. This is the last issue.

The editor writes:

I have appreciated all the input from people on the "Should STARLink Continue?" survey as well, and encourage any of you who haven't returned those yet to do so. To those of you who offered constructive criticism and/or serious recommendations as to how the future of STARLink should be handled—I will take your comments to heart. I don't want STARLink to be one of those zines that limps slowly and painfully to an ugly demise...issues coming out later and later, and people gradually becoming disgusted with the whole project. I've subscribed to enough of those 'zines that I know how frustrating the process can be. If STARLink were to cease publication, I would want to do it cleanly and quickly, without a lot of messy delay. As it stands right now, however, despite a busy personal and fannish life, I very much enjoy the process of producing the zine, and would prefer to continue publishing it on as regular a schedule as I possibly can, as long as the readership is there to continue contributing. One respondant mentioned that the survey/poll was somewhat self-serving... "who is going to say they DON'T want STARLink to continue," while another mentioned that "Of course I'm going to stay with the zine...you're the only game in town!" They're both right, of course. I wanted people to feel like they could bring their opinions and or suggestions about the zine to me in a structured fashion...so while the survey may have been somewhat self-serving, it was also intended to guage the overall readership's current state of mind. Regarding the second issue. I wish STARLink wasn't the only game in town. I think this kind of forum is quite useful to fans. The popularity of computer bulletin board discussion groups is undeniable, however they provide mainly quick fixes. A 'zine like STARLink, I think, forces people to sit down and think a little more intensely about what they want to say, so that when they put it down on paper it's said with a little more clarity and more feeling than the instantaneous "fix" of seeing their words immediately blurbed out into electronic forums without that period of reflection. And there are still a lot of fans who don't even have access to such electronic forums, so STARLink does serve a useful purpose. I can't encourage others to start their own zines...the work level is so heavy it's not something I'd wish on an enemy, but I also wouldn't trade the rewards I've received in all the friends I've made through all my years of publishing (1984-present) for anything!
