BlackRose: "Meditation"

Rituals & Meditations is a single issue 352-page slash Star Wars: The Phantom Menace zine edited by Jennifer/Gail, Master Ruth and Layna.

The art is by BlackRose, Barbara (Barbara Cameron, spelled "Barbana" in the table of contents), Fuumin, Gloriana, Gail Riordan, Mac, Mystique, RavenD, and Jade.

It is a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan zine; the only other pairings are secondary or background pairings.

This zine focuses on the religious, spiritual and/or ritual side of Jedi life.

It required an age statement to purchase, and story warnings were included on the table of contents.

From the Zine

Throughout the zine, THIS IS THOUGHT, and THIS IS TELEPATHY OR BOND-SPEAK. Emphasis is given in italics, and flashbacks in bold. Various spelling conventions are used, as Canada, Australia, Germany and the UK as well as the US are all represented in this volume. All other design choices, formats and typos are the responsibility of the copyeditor (Gail).

Feedback will be welcomed by everyone who participated in this effort. Email addresses are given with each story for the authors, and in the list of illustrations for the artists. Even the editors would like to hear from you! Paper mail should be sent to the publisher’s address.

Stories

  • Meditations on a Moment in Time by Gail Riordan (previously posted to Master & Apprentice, from the author: "One of the stories that inspired Ruth to propose doing this zine in the first place. Sockii did the photomanip that got me started, Destina helped me figure out the real title and Ruth & Mark cheered me on.") (PG) (8)
  • The Lovers' Kata by Lori & Wolfling (PG, "There is no death, there is the Force. This tale illustrates one way that principle might manifest.") (12)
  • Simple Gift by Thia (G, "Relationships grow in small steps. This story illustrates one such increment.") (16)
  • Essay on Passion by SarahQ (NC-17, "While trying to wrap her brain around the Jedi Code, this came of SarahQ’s thoughts." Previously posted to Master & Apprentice) (20)
  • Enlightenment by Susan Anthony (PG to NC17. Obi-Wan walks a long path to Enlightenment of the Body. Part 1 of The Enlightenment Series. QG/Other, Xan/OW, AU, Romance, Humor. "This story was inspired by one of Master Ruth's plot bunnies. Thanks very much to Maig for her wonderful beta and to Kath for her comments. Xanatos may be abit out of character but who knows what he would have been like had he not turned? Chan kisses but nothing else underage." Later posted to LdyGossamer's FanFiction Archive.) (25)
  • Merging into One by Pumpkin & Lori (NC-17) (50)
  • Meditations on a Cloak, poetry by Gail Riordan (PG, "Theme and variations on a garment.") (55)
  • Way of the Elements by Pumpkin (R) (59)
  • Test of the Heart by Raonaid (NC-17, "Obi-Wan follows an ancient Jedi ritual and claims the right to his master’s body. But will that be enough, when what he really wants is his master’s heart?" - "This is a pure unashamed smarmy comfort fic. I wrote this to cheer myself up, and restore some of my faith in love and fidelity. Well, that and I’d always been Interested in the idea of a Jedi ritual for Master-Padawan sexual relations, {wink}") (66)
  • Catenatus by Tem-ve-H.Syan (NC-17, BDSM, includes Q/other, ""Catenatus" is Latin for "chained." Quigs does not really end up in chains at any point ... not physically anyway.") (74)
  • Blood Music by Mac (R, darkfic, AU) (84)
  • Rituals of the Sacred and Mundane, vignettes by Sian ("Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference throughout a life.") (90)
  • Fifth Kata, Jinn's Twelfth Variation by Ruth Gifford (NC-17, BDSM, "Sparked by a first-line challenge, this story explores the concept of reversals, and the idea that one is never too old to learn new things about oneself." - "Notes: Mention is made in this story of two of Lee Writestuff’s Jedi“ exercises,” in this case the fear and anger exercises. I deliberately leave out the pain exercises because the existence of those exercises would render my story somewhat unnecessary. In all, however, I owe Lee many thanks for her presenting a Jedi teaching system that is harsh of necessity. I also too the ideas of katras (or forms) at varying speeds from both Black Rose and Gail Riordan's JAOA stories, particularly Gail's wonderful "Structured Forms."") (119)
  • Tread Softly by Keelywolf (NC-17, "A year after the events of TPM, Obi-Wan returns to Naboo. Another exploration of the fourth precept of the Code.") (128)
  • A Litany of Hearts and Flowers by Gail Riordan
  • Meditation on a Rock, poem by Gail Riordan (G, "In Jedi Apprentice 3, The Hidden Past, Master Qui-Gon gives Obi-Wan a rock. Much food for thought has that gift provided.") (136)
  • Ritual of Two by Marag (R, "Marag has written a lovely and thoughtful approach to that thorny question of the First Time.") (138)
  • The Steppe of Memory by Ruth Gifford, vignettes (PG-13, "This story was inspired by Jade’s lovely illustration, and is that rarity among ties, a PG-13 story from Master Ruth’s keyboard.") (146)
  • The Springtime in His Eyes by Lori and Wolfling (PG, "When spring comes to the Coruscant temple Qui-Gon finds himself in a dilemma that is sparked by the look in his Padawan’s eyes.") (170)
  • The Ritual of Remembering by RavenD (R, The story is part of the The Memory Series which follows canon (theoretically). "Obi-Wan deals with the loss of his master." The rest of the series was archived at Raven Dreams.) (179)
  • A Litany of Hearts and Flowers by Gail, Ruth, and Laynal (PG, "This little bit of fluff came about when we realized that while we had stories that dealt in one way or another with soul-bonds and other types of commitment, we had no actual wedding stories. So, we wrote one ourselves.") (191)
  • Compay Segundo by Gloriana (NC-17, "The Ritual of Acquiescence proves difficult for both Master and Padawan.") (196)
  • Braid by Pumpkin (NC-17, "As the braid grows, the meaning does as well.) (previously posted to Master & Apprentice) (283)
  • Opening the Eighth Gate by Fishgoat (R, "Obi-Wan learns anew way to Oneness with the Force;") (299)
  • Need and Discovery by Gail Riordan (NC-17, "Dealing with the consequences of a difficult mission.") (307)

Submission Request for a Proposed Second Issue

In June 2002, the editors proposed a second issue, one which didn't occur.

0-Eye Press is looking for a few good rituals. OK we're actually looking for a lot of good rituals. And meditations. Yes, the people who brought you Rituals and Meditations are now conspiring to bring you Rituals and Mediations [sic] II.

What we want: TPM slash stories and artwork about the rituals and/or meditations that fill the lives of the Jedi. For R&M I we asked for Jedi or personal rituals only, this time we're expanding the parameters to include the alien rituals that the boyz must surely encounter in the course of their missions. So, whether you want to tell a First Night story, or a Virgin!Sacrifice story, a Memory Ritual story or a "weird alien marriage" story, a . . . oh, you get the point. Although we do not insist on Qui/Obi stories, we do ask that at least one them be a main character in the story. Also, AU stories (such as people who died in canon not dying) are OK, but we'd like to stay away from extreme AR (alternate reality) stories. If you have more specific questions about story ideas or art ideas, feel free to write and ask.

Why we want this: We are fascinated with the idea that the Jedi are considered to be a religious order as well as a fighting one. And yet, we saw so little of their spiritual side in TPM. Based on the number of rituals, meditations, ceremonies, katas and so on invented by slashers, you are fascinated as well. Share, won't you?

When we want it: Our deadline is August 1. Need I say that the sooner you get your stories to us, the sooner we can send them out to interested artists? Nah, didn't think I needed to mention that. [1]
