Reconnaissance Press was established in 1983 as a publisher of Space: 1999 and Star Trek: TOS fanzines by Tony Wynn in San Antonio, Texas.

The Press published two zines: Darkshine by Lynn Ward was a Star Trek zine published in 1983, and The Alpha Files was a 1985 Space: 1999 zine; both were released under the Reconnaissance Press imprint. Upon formation, it was advertised that Reconnaissance Press was "pleased to announce its new line of Star Trek and Space: 1999 novelettes... new action adventure stories."

Local science fiction fan Phyllis Wood provided needed assistance in the preparation, proofreading, and printing of materials produced by the Press.

In July 1983, the editor, Tony Wynn, explained the imprint's origins:

"My 'love-affair' with science fiction began in the early 70's when I saw my first Star Trek reruns on TV... I published the Reconnaissance Newsletter (now the Reconnaissance Quarterly and soon to evolve into Reconnaissance Press) and became the first editor of the Starfleet Communique..." [1]

Other Publications

The imprint also published four issues of the Reconnaissance Quarterly newsletter, focused on [[Space: 1999] fandom.

The Press also had oversight of the production of a convention program for Trekkon '83 in San Antonio, Texas

Additionally, the first seven issues of The Fleet Herald, the bi-monthly newsletter of Trek International, were published under the Reconnaissance Press banner. This periodical commenced publication in December 1983 with Volume 1, Issue 1, which was dated December 1983/January 1984. This was the official periodical of Trek International, a Star Trek fan organization.
