The story focuses on the characters of Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Nyota Uhura.

There were 250 numbered copies printed.
It was one of two zines released under the Reconnaissance Press imprint, founded by Tony Wynn.
Publicity material stated Reconnaissance Press was "pleased to announce its new line of Star Trek and Space: 1999 novelettes... new action adventure stories."
An ad for the zine from April 1983 published in Reconnaissance Quarterly contained the following information:
"...A 100+ page work, this is an action-adventure story that will please the most demanding of Star Trek fans. DARKSHINE, written by Lynn Ward of San Antonio, Texas, is a limited 250 copy first-edition printing. All 250 copies of this first printing will be numbered. Author's autograph is optional.
