The Really Big Hanson Fanfic Awards were awards for Hanson fanfic. The only round, in 1999, was moderated by Katie and Lisa. Awards were given in three categories -- cast and characters; writers; and stories.
These awards (or more accurately, some of the nominees) were not without controversy:[1][2][3]
It's times like these that I truly question the minds of those reading fanfiction, and even those writing the stories themselves. Sure, some of the stories deserved their nominations, but for the most part, the awards are purely teenie-infested, filled to the brim with stories by authors who more than likely campaigned for their stories to end up on the final panel. It's purely disgusting, and the main reason I boycotted the entire awards myself, for it's all become a popularity contest and has no real literary merit whatsoever.
Yet ANOTHER gripe... "Best Funny Story" (which, any educated person would realize would normally be reffered to as a COMEDY) fails to showcase "Tulsa 74132". Sure, they're not updating anymore, but it's still by FAR the funniest creation on the internet, and to get shunned in such a way to stories with absolutely no substance whatsoever such as the awful "Dazed, Confused, and Horny" or whatever it's called is an insult to the entire genre known as Hanson fanfiction.
I agree that there are many authors and stories that deserved much more than they got. My for instance is April's "One Night" receiving a nomination for "Best Dirty Story." What a slap in the face. Yes, April's stories are racy, but there is a difference between well-written erotica and "dirty" stories. The thing is, the people who were nominating stories couldn't see past the fact that there were sex scenes in the story. For them, that automatically made the story "dirty." I guess my point is that these are awards based on opinion.
I admit that I'm flattered to have been nominated for these awards. And some may be surprised to know that many of us who were nominated ... myself, Julie, Amanda, Stephanie, April, Pamella and Sharon ... are all adults in our 20s and 30s, some of us even beyond. We are trying to raise the bar, and these awards you call a travesty were really a victory for us.
We disliked the fact that more "trashy" stories were winning awards. So what? Those kids are writing, and I tend to think that that's what fanfiction is all about. Getting people to read or write, that wouldn't be interested on the average occasion? We are no better than anyone else, because of our writing style. Some are amateur and some have been working for decades; it's not a race to see who finishes fast or who runs the nicest. We're only supposed to keep running.
