Possessive behaviour is a trope in which a character expects intense and sometimes exclusive attention, loyalty, and affection from another (typically their partner or love interest). In some instances, this behaviour is portrayed as romantic and protective, while in others it is – or is interpreted as – controlling and abusive. Possessive characters frequently exhibit jealousy toward perceived rivals.

Certain character archetypes include possessive tendencies as a central trait. Yanderes are both violently possessive and extremely affectionate. The possessive, controlling, sexually dominant "Dark Fuck Prince" originated as a fannish characterization of BBC!Sherlock.

Possessiveness is also a common element in works featuring vampires, werewolves, and A/B/O dynamics. These works often incorporate rituals or gestures through which the dominant character asserts their ownership, such as biting, claiming, or scent marking.

Character-specific interpretations of the possessiveness trope may be denoted on AO3 with tags such as "Possessive Bucky Barnes,"[1] "Possessive Draco Malfoy,"[2] "Possessive Kylo Ren",[3] etc.
