Abuse in Fanfiction can take different forms, and serve different narrative purposes. Abuse can refer to abuse which occurs or is implied to occur during the events of the story. Alternatively, a character may be emotionally or psychologically impacted by abuse they suffered in the past.
Fanworks featuring abuse are often dark and angsty but may also fall under the category of hurt/comfort.
