Pizza Tower is a 2023 video game developed by indie studio Tour De Pizza. The game follows pizza chef Peppino Spaghetti as he traverses the titular tower to save his restaurant. The gameplay, graphics, and soundtrack of the game are inspired by 1990s and early 2000s media such as the Wario Land series, Earthworm Jim, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Jet Set Radio.
Pizza Tower had a five-year development cycle and over time accrued a small fanbase that followed the game's development. Upon the game's official release, the fanbase rapidly expanded and the game became an meme on social media platforms such as Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, and Newgrounds.
Canon
In Pizza Tower, you as Peppino Spaghetti, a middle-aged Italian who has to go through the Pizza Tower to stop the villain, Pizza Head from destroying his restaurant (in this case, a run-down pizzeria). The tower itself is made up of 5 floors, each one representing the theme of the boss you have to fight.
The gameplay takes inspiration from the Wario Land series with the art style being a mix of pixel art and 90s-era cartoons, though it has also been compared to 2000s Cartoon Network shows such as Ed, Edd N Eddy.
Fandom
While the game itself and even the creator doesn't offer much lore about the game and characters, it didn't stop the fandom from being really creative with the characters. Soon after the game launched, fan art of the game, characters, and fanfiction started being created, most of which being tribute art which soon developed into people creating AUs of game, starting with a sub-genre of AUs that simply take the Pizza Tower characters and altering them to reflect other countries, most of which being done by creators of different ethnicities.
As the game grew popular, more unique AUs started being made, focusing on specific characters such as Peppino, Fake Peppino, or unique stories such as Pepperoni Tower, an ask blog AU where Peppino doesn't make it out during the Crumbling Tower Of Pizza level and takes Pizzahead's place as both the towers owner and antagonist.
