Pellispawn

Pellispawn is a term used in the Arthuriana fandom to collectively refer to Sir Percival and his paternal siblings. The name derives from King Pellinore, who is Percival's best-known father, though his father's name is given differently in some texts. Pellinore notoriously had many children, up to sixteen, with various women. When Percival's father is given a different name, his siblings by that man are still considered Pellispawn. A good example is that in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, Sir Gahmuret is the father of Sir Feirefiz by his first wife Belacane and Parzival (Percival) by his second wife Herzeloyde, and Feirefiz is considered Pellispawn by the fandom.

The Pellispawn

  • Sir Aglovale: When he appears, he is sometimes listed as the oldest. He is killed by Lancelot in Le Morte D'Arthur.
  • Sir Alain (or Aleyn): he is Drian's brother. If a full or paternal sibling, he is one of the Pellispawn.
  • Alyne: Also known as Elaine or Eleine, she appears in Le Morte D'Arthur and in a Post-Vulgate Merlin continuation. She dies tragically.
  • Dindrane: She is often conflated with the Grail Heroine.
  • Sir Drian: He is also known as Adrian, Brian, Dornar, Doryan, Drians, Driant, Durnor, Durnore, or Tryan. He is sometimes killed by Gawain.
  • Sir Feirefiz: The son of a Moorish queen, he is a noble knight married to the queen of India who only appears in Parzival.
  • The Grail Heroine: She helps Percival, Galahad, and Bors on the quest for the Holy Grail before sacrificing herself so the rest can go on.
  • Sir Lamorak: He is most famous for his skill in jousting and his affair with Queen Morgause of Orkney. He is killed by one or more of the Orkney brothers.
  • Sir Percival: The most famous of the Pellispawn, he seeks the Holy Grail. Depending on the story, he achieves it solo and lives or achieves it with Galahad and Bors and dies not long after.
  • Sir Tor son of Aries: He was raised by a cowherd and continues to use his adopted father's name in his title. He is killed by Lancelot.

Some of the Pellispawn are popular characters, with the best-known being Percival, followed by Dindrane and Lamorak. Others are nearly forgotten, like Alain and Drian. The Pellispawn are often seen as a tragic family, since most of the better-known siblings die violent or untimely deaths.
