Sir Gawain is one of the most commonly occurring characters in Arthurian Legend and a popular character in the Arthuriana fandom. He is generally the oldest of the Orkney siblings and the nephew of King Arthur. In earlier stories, Gawain served as a paragon of chivalry; over time, portrayals of him became more mixed.

There are a number of different versions of Gawain popular in the Arthuriana fandom. Blogger @ladyminaofcamelot divided fans' favorite Gawains into six categories: "the honorable chivalrous Gawain", the Gawain who "sleeps with everyone", "Murdery Gawain (affectionate)", "Murdery Gawain (derogatory)", the tragic hero Gawain who "started Honorable but slowly spiraled into Violence as he tried to live up to an ideal he could never reach", and "Horsegirl Gawain".
