Gawain(e)/Lancelot is the pairing of Sir Gawain and Sir Lancelot du Lac, both knights of King Arthur's court. Like most characters from Arthurian legend, there are multiple spellings used for both characters (though far more for Gawain), which can make it difficult for fans to find and search for—however, the current most popular names in use by the fandom are Lancelot du Lac and Gawain.

Members of the Arthuriana fandom who ship these characters frequently point to their interactions in the Lancelot Vulgate Cycle. For example, Gawain once wishes to be the most beautiful woman in the world if that is what it would take to be Lancelot's most beloved. (This quote has also been interpreted as Gawain being a trans woman or as Gawain calling Lancelot out on his feelings for Guinevere and calling Galehaut out on his feelings for Lancelot). Additionally, Lancelot gives Gawain an ultimately-mortal wound using the Sword with the Red Hilt. It is said that any knight save the very greatest who uses the sword for a prolonged time is doomed to kill the man he loves most with it.

This ship is referred to in the fandom as Remarkable because of a quote from the Vulgate where Lancelot tells Sir Bors to "call it remarkable" if he wishes, but Lancelot will always love Gawain no matter how much Gawain hates him.

Gawain comes to hate Lancelot in several texts because Lancelot unintentionally kills Gawain's brothers Gareth and Gaheris while trying to save his illicit lover Queen Guinevere from being burned at the stake for adultery. Some have seen these events as reflecting negatively on the ship's strength. Others argue that the ship would prevent the Guinevere/Lancelot affair and thus benefit Camelot. A Tumblr poll with over a hundred votes concluded that Remarkable would not save the Round Table "but it would be entertaining".
