Gawain(e)/Lancelot is the pairing of Gawain and Lancelot du Lac, both knights of King Arthur's court, popular in the Arthuriana fandom. This ship is most frequently referred to as Remarkable because of a quote from the Vulgate cycle: Lancelot tells Bors to "call it remarkable" if he wishes, but Lancelot will always love Gawain no matter how much Gawain hates him.
In Medieval Literature
In the Lancelot Vulgate Cycle, Gawain once wishes to be the most beautiful woman in the world if that is what it would take to be Lancelot's most beloved. Additionally, Lancelot gives Gawain an ultimately-mortal wound using a sword known in fandom as the Sword with the Red Hilt. It is said that any knight save the very greatest who uses the sword for a prolonged time is doomed to kill the man he loves most with it.
Gawain comes to hate Lancelot in several texts because Lancelot unintentionally kills Gawain's brothers Gareth and Gaheris while trying to save his illicit lover Queen Guinevere from being burned at the stake for adultery. However, on his deathbed, having been struck again on the place where Lancelot wounded him by another, Gawain writes Lancelot a letter forgiving him and begging him to go to Arthur's aid.
In Fandom
Remarkable is one of the most popular ships in the Arthuriana fandom. Its popularity may be influenced by shippers who dislike Lancevere or prefer monogamous Guinarthur, causing it to become dominant at a time when Lancevere hatred was strong. Though possibly less dominant than it used to be, it remains a very popular and respected ship.
Some fans see Lancelot killing Gawain's brothers as reflecting negatively on the ship's strength. Others argue that the ship would prevent the Guinevere/Lancelot affair and thus benefit Camelot. A Tumblr poll with over a hundred votes concluded that Remarkable would not save the Round Table "but it would be entertaining".
