Granblue Fantasy is a role-playing gacha game for Android, iOS and web browser. Granblue Fantasy is translated in-house, and all content is released in both Japanese and English concurrently.

Canon

The main character's default name is Gran (male) or Djeeta (female), but a custom name can be entered. The story begins when the player character meets a blue-haired girl named Lyria and her guardian, a former soldier of the Erste Empire named Katalina. Katalina has just escaped from the Empire, which has been keeping Lyria captive to experiment on her. The player character forms a magical bond with Lyria that links their lives together. When Erste soldiers arrive, the player character tries to defend Lyria, but is killed in battle. The life link immediately revives them, and reveals the ability to summon powerful Primal Beasts. After this, the game follows the usual gacha format of traveling and recruiting characters by rolling with in-game currency or real money.

Fandom

Prior to 2017, the game mostly targeted straight male players with fanservice. Fandom activity skewed more towards the female characters, and while there were few works on Archive of Our Own, what was there leaned towards femslash. In March of 2017, the character Sandalphon was introduced in an anniversary event called What Makes the Sky Blue. Sandalphon became a massive breakout character, drawing many new players into the game for the first time, and Lucifer/Sandalphon remains the fandom's single most popular ship. There has since been tension between the two player bases over perceived imbalance of fanservice.
