Gacha games are a type of video game. The term originates from "gachapon" machines in Japan, which consist of a container filled with small capsules holding toys or other merchandise. When a coins or token is inserted, a capsule is dispensed. It has come to refer to any kind of random giveaway mechanic in video games, especially one where the outcome cannot be affected by the player.
Mobile gacha games are usually distinguished by a wide array of available characters to obtain, or variations of a core set of characters (such as different outfits/themes, or better weapons and equipment). They also often have complex, ongoing stories that evolve through seasonal events, accompanied by new and shiny character cards.
Fandom
Gacha games come in several different varieties, but most are either a kind of fighting/battle adventure game, such as Genshin Impact, or an idol raising/rhythm game such as BanG Dream!. Fans of one type of gacha game will often play other gacha games of that type (such as Genshin Impact fans playing Honkai Star Rail and BanG Dream! fans playing Project Sekai), but genre crossover is less common. Some gacha game fans will play many different kinds of gacha games, though.

Terms
- Banner characters: The newest, special, highest-rarity cards available at a given time. Sometimes available only for the duration of the "banner", or event, and sometimes added to the permanent pool of cards. Different gacha games have different banner systems, with different availability of characters and rarities in each pool of cards.
- Pull: used either as a noun or a verb; to "spin" the gacha and get something from the available set
- Roll: synonym for "pull," likewise used as a noun or verb
- Hard Pity: a certain number of rolls guarantees a banner character or an SSR.[1]
- Soft Pity: Chance of pulling an SSR increases as the number of pulls increases.
- Sparking: Each roll gives you points that can then be traded in for a banner character.
- SSR: "Super Special Rare", acronym for the highest rarity card possible in gacha games (general)[2] or in the specific games that use this rarity system. Some games call the SSR equivalent other superlative terms, or use stars to indicate rarity.
