Parvati Patil is a supporting character from the Harry Potter series. She is a Gryffindor and one of Harry's classmates at Hogwarts.

Canon Background

Parvati shares a dormitory with Hermione Granger and Lavender Brown. She and Lavender are best friends, and the two are often described as giggling and gossiping together. Parvati has an identical twin sister, Padma Patil, who was sorted into Ravenclaw house.

Parvati and Lavender are passionate about Divination and idolize the teacher, Professor Trelawney. This affinity for Divination (a "very woolly" subject), along with their giggling, gossiping, and interest in boys and fashion, together gives the impression that the girls are vain, credulous, and silly. However, Parvati is also shown to be brave and loyal, standing up for Harry and Neville as early as Philosopher's Stone, joining the DA, and ultimately fighting against Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the final battle.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Parvati attends the Yule Ball with Harry. Harry invites her in desperation after being turned down by Cho Chang, and their date does not go well. Parvati ends up spending most of the ball with an older Beauxbatons boy, whom she later arranges to meet in Hogsmeade.

Parvati is described as very pretty and (although it is never stated explicitly) implied to be of Indian descent. This is suggested by her and Padma's names as well as by the description of her Yule Ball attire, where she is described as wearing bangles and braiding her hair with gold—both hallmarks of Indian fashion. The film adaption takes this a step further, with Parvati and Padma appearing in lehenga style outfits.

Shipping

Parvati frequently appears in femslash. Parvati/Lavender is the most common, due to their close relationship in the books. Parvati/Padma twincest is also common, including threesomes with another character. Other femslash partners include Sybill Trelawney, Hermione Granger, Pansy Parkinson, and various others.

For het, Dean/Parvati is common due to Dean's comment in Goblet of Fire that she and her identical twin Padma were "the best-looking girls in the year" and to complement Seamus/Lavender, who attend the Yule Ball together. She is also sometimes shipped with Harry himself (Harry/Parvati), despite their lackluster Yule Ball date, and her blushing when he invites her to the ball can be considered a sign of her interest in him.

She also expresses interest in Firenze, a centaur who becomes Divination teacher and whom Parvati describes as "gorgeous" (and curls her eyelashes for in anticipation of his class).
