This is just an excellent story. The premise has to do with the choosing of padawans in an alternate universe where the structure of the Jedi is somewhat different, and the duties and life paths expected of padawans aren't what we are used to. It involves an underage Obi-Wan being intimate with his master, so don't read the story if that or the abuse of students by older students bothers you - but trust me when I say that it's handled beautifully and with great care to advance the plot. The development of the relationship between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan is wonderful and really makes this story shine.[1]
Padawan Learner is an unusual story for me to recommend, as normally I wouldn't have made it past the first few pages. There be darkness at the Jedi Temple, a darkness that has battered Obi-Wan both emotionally and physically. But I soldiered on because the fic had been rec'ced, and I'm glad I did. Obi-Wan is wounded, but he still has a resolute determination and inner strength that feels very true to the canon character. Qui-Gon has been wounded too, by Xanatos' defection to the dark side, and is deeply conflicted by the relationship in which he finds himself with Obi-Wan. The trust and love that grows slowly between the two as they learn about each other and develop their Master-Padawan relationship simply makes me melt, and seems particularly true and moving, having triumphed over such a troubled beginning. One of the posting guidelines mentions 'controversial' fics, and this story of a chan encounter between underage Obi-Wan Kenobi and his new Master, Qui-Gon, qualifies. Traumatized by forbidden acts in the Initiates' quarters, ambitious to be a Padawan, anyone's Padawan as long as he can eventually be Knighted, Obi-Wan's love experiences were anything but tender by the time he is apprenticed to Qui-Gon. It takes a loving Master to guide and shape the appropriate responses to physicality in his new Padawan, and Qui-Gon is up to the task. Warning per the site: "These tales are chanslash; that is, they involve a teenage Obi-Wan Kenobi being sexually intimate with his adult male master. If this is offensive to you, please do not read them."[5]
