Overlord is a minor character in the Transformers franchise. First appearing as a major villain in the Super-God Masterforce Japanese-exclusive season of the original 1984 Transformers cartoon series in 1988, most English-language fanworks derive from his role as the violent, sadistic megalomaniac from the Transformers Generation One IDW Comics starting in 2010.
Canon Background
[characterization, story role, further important appearances]
Popular Tropes & Fanon
- Overlord is often seen as "his own warning," in fanworks, similar to "dead dove." Gore, torture and murder are common tropes for him.
- Voice Kink: voice kink is popular, as Overlord is commonly headcanoned to have a rich timbre. Due to the southern accent Patrick Seitz decided to give him in the Prime Wars Trilogy (seen as an extension of the IDW comics canon,) Southern Belle Overlord has been used more than once on Archive of Our Own. Related is the idea that he's a good kisser, since he's one of the only male Transformer characters to have pronounced lips.
- Possessive Overlord: he wanted to be the only person who could defeat Megatron in gladiatorial combat, admiring him as much as he wanted to kill him.
- Kidnapper Overlord: common setup in Overlord/Trepan works, with Overlord having kidnapped Trepan before the events of the IDW comics.
- Bigender Overlord: bigender Overlord is not unheard of, as he pretended to be a "Megan Guiglione" while disguising himself as a human on Earth.
Subjects of Fannish Interest & Meta

Overlord's characterization within the Transformers Generation One IDW Comics, primarily by head writer James Roberts, is often the subject of ableism discussion meta, though less so than similar characters Pharma, Tarn and Getaway.
