mergatrude's first fandom was Labyrinth (2002), in which she wrote a handful of stories and was mean to Sarah. She joined in the shennanigans in Due South fandom in 2003, where she wrote, beta-ed and maintained communities. Other fandoms she has dallied with include C6D, SGA, White Collar, The Losers, Doctor Who and Captain America.

She has always been a strong proponent of using off-LJ archives, and was thus delighted by the creation of Archive Of Our Own.

She has an affected insistence on spelling her name with a lower case m.

in Due South

In Due South, mergatrude was originally a dedicated fan of Fraser/Kowalski but she's since swung both Rays, and is now fond of all major (and several minor) Due South pairings. In particular, she has a soft spot for Fraser/Smitherbauer and is one of a small band of dedicated Kowalski/Gardino shippers.

other quirks

mergatrude loves wingfic, and maintains a Masterlist of Due South and C6D wingfic[1].

mergatrude began recording podfic in 2012, and doesn't look like stopping any time soon. Her Aussie accent has been referred to as "cute."

She and china_shop share a fictional cruiseliner[2], peopled with Canadian actors and fictional characters, as well as an animatronic llama.

fandom organising

In 2007, mergatrude and the_antichris ran ds_northernnews, a fic and art challenge based on actual headlines from CBC Northern News[3].

She took over running the C6D Midsummer Santa fic exchange on LiveJournal for the C6D fandom from 2009 to 2013.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many

She is a co-moderator of ds_ficfinders, and assisted Sprat with running due South Seekrit Santa in 2008 and 2009. From 2010 to 2013, she ran due South Seekrit Santa with Sage, and in 2014 with Luzula and Ride_Forever.

She co-mods a Sam Wilson/Steve Rogers community mcu_onyourleft[4] with China Shop.

writing

China Shop in due South Author Profiles says:

"mergatrude's writing is lyrical, with a fine awareness of language. She writes poetry as well as prose, and her subject matter ranges from warm certainty to poignancy. Many of her longer works have disrupted or multiple timelines, and although some of her stories have crack premises, they are written with awareness and honesty rather than played for laughs." [5]

Blanket Statement

mergatrude gives blanket permission for further transformation of her fanworks:

"You do not need to ask my permission to remix, podfic, translate, create art for or create secondary fanwork of any fanwork I have created. I'd appreciate it if you credit me and include a link back to my work. And please let me know because I'd love to see it."[6]

notable works

due South

  • Thus, every feather obeys the wind (Fraser/Kowalski, PG, AU wingfic) This Fraser/Kowalski wingfic is fractured and poignant, disturbing and lovely. It shifts back and forward in time.
  • Dorothy (Kowalski/Gardino, PWP) This is bitter and desperate and darkly funny. Warning for infidelity.

Other Fandoms

  • On Your Woof! Captain America (movies)(Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, G) "I love Sam Wilson so much I gave him a puppy!"
  • Wishbones (podfic) Captain America (movies) (Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Thor, G)
  • Bar-hopping to Loserville (podfic) The Losers (Aisha al-Fadhil/Franklin Clay, Carlos "Cougar" Alvarez/Jake Jensen, M). A recording of the three stories in Brigantine's series of this title.
