Kirk/Spock Online Festival/KSOF 2004-2005
In 2004 the Kirk/Spock Online Festival was split into summer and winter editions rather than two 'waves' as had been done in previous years. The summer festival was published as Side by Side Special Edition 5 in July 2004 and referred to as KSOF 2004, while the winter festival was published as Side by Side Special Edition 6 and ended up being referred to as KSOF 2004/2005.
Summer Editions
'The Frottage Challenge' was the key theme of KSOF 2004, and was announced to mailing lists and e-groups in March of that year as well as being added to Lady Kardasi's Domain. The rules were largely the same as in previous years, with requirements around exclusivity clearly specified.[1]
Although many of the included works met the challenge a variety of non-challenge stories and art were also included and for the first time kira-nerys had additional support from Farfalla in order to get the summer edition published.
To help out Kira and to help make the stories available a leetle sooner, I'm going to do the coding for the July issue of Side by Side, the one that was supposed to be the KSOF summer frottage challenge (this is NOT the friday the 13th thing.)If you submitted a story, poem, piece of art, drabble, baked good, or small furry animal to this issue, the one that was supposed to be out on July 1, please RE-SEND it, to [...] and let me know what it is. I'll take most formats--Word, .rtf, .txt, .cwk, .html ... just please, if you want to make me happy, please turn off Smart Quotes in Word. ^_^
[...]
Anyway, thanks again, and hope this isn't too big of an inconvenience.[2]– Farfalla
Farfalla is helping me with the Summer Challenge stories, so anyone who wrote one, could you please send to Farfie? She'll make an announcement about it onlist and contact the authors as well, so that you can all send them to her. That way you won't have to wait very long for the stories.[2]– Kira

Winter Editions
The Winter Edition was first announced on mailing lists and e-groups in September 2004, with a challenge web page released at the same time. The theme for this edition of KSOF was the 'What If...' challenge, although as in past editions some non-challenge stories and art were also included in the final product. For the second time cash prizes were offered, this time from the very first announcement, but it is unclear whether these eventuated.
Announcements
Kirk/Spock Online Festival Winter of 2004/2005The "What If ...?" Scenarios [...]
This "What if..." Challenge entails writing stories about Kirk and Spock, during the years we don't see them on screen. Be it the Cadet Years, the In-between years, or any other time, when canon doesn't cover their lives in detail. I might not have managed to cover all of those times, so if you come up with your own ideas - go for it! [...]
PRIZES ... WILL ... BE ... GIVEN ... TO ... THE ... THREE ... BEST ... STORIES
Prizes yet to be determined, however[3]
First of all - apologies to anyone who gets this more than once.Second - As some of you may already know, there is a Kirk/Spock Winter Festival running. You can check out the rules and regulations at this URL. http://www.kardasi.com/KSOF-2004--05/index.htm
The stories will be posted in the Special Edition #6 of Side By Side, (http://www.kardasi.com/SBS/sbsmain.htm) which goes online (if I get any submissions that is) on April Fool's Day of 2005.
As of right now the festival has been really, really slow, and the deadline is coming closer - March 28, 2005. That means people have a little more than a month to write a story in response to the challenge. I hope more K/S fans will join now that I'm informing about it again! If you are writing for the festival, I would be pleased to know - do send me a private email to let me know at kira at kardasi dot com.
The winner will recieve 50 US dollars (donated by yours truly) and a used copy of First Time 52 (donated by Lyra), published by Merry Men Press. If anyone wants to donate a few dollars for more cash prizes, you can send them to: ksof-donation at kardasi dot com through PayPal. This prize will be dealt out on one condition however, and that is that there are at least 5 participants in the competition.
Winners will be crowned by the readers through a poll running from April 1, 2005 and April 30, 2005 on a list that will be announced in SBS Special Edition #6 when the stories go online!
Personally, I may or may not participate, depending on whether or not I have an idea, but suffice it to say, I'm not eligible for the prize(s) :-)
Good luck and do join![4]
Rules
Rules were again similar to those used for previous editions, with one exception. For the first time in the publicly available rule set, some subject matter exclusions were made.
I have a few no-nos for this fest.
NO scat
NO golden showers
NO necrophilia
NO bestiality
NO incest
NO underage
Other kinks, however, are welcome though. Public sex? Leather? Bukkake (I learned a new word from Farfalla), BDSM, D/s, Bondage etc... If that's what floats your boat, go for it![5]
Challenges
Challenges were split into specific groupings covering periods of Kirk and Spock's lives that were not directly addressed by canon.
The Cadet YearsCan you imagine Kirk and Spock playing pranks on the teachers? Or rather Kirk doing it and Spock trying to stop him, while both of them end up in trouble because Spock is way too loyal to betray his new-found friend?
Can you imagine Spock and Kirk studying hard for an exam, and Kirk luring Spock out on some fun and they both flunk?
Or what happened that time when Kirk and Spock got lost in the woods during an orientation class? (Spock must have hit his head before that one, right?)
Or ... yes, what else could have happend during Starfleet Academy, had Spock and Kirk both been attending at the same time? Come up with your own ideas and go for it![5]
After GenerationsWhat if Kirk hadn't died on Veridian III? We need to repair the flaws in that movie, don't we?
What if Spock had entered the Nexus? What would have happened, had Spock been there to help Picard and Kirk fight Soran?
What if Kirk had never been sucked into that horrid space phenomenon at all? Would Veridian III have been destroyed, and the whole Enterprise D crew with it?
What would Kirk's and Spock's futures have been like if ... yes, what if ...? What happens in your particular world - after Generations? Show us by writing a deeply moving, interesting or hot story. Or ... all of the above! :)[5]
The Second Five Year MissionWhat if Spock and Kirk had gone on a second five year mission? What kind of adventures would they have experienced together?
Or what happened to send Spock off to Gol? Why did he decide to even try to achieve the Kohlinar?
What if Spock had been given his own ship during this five-year mission. How would Spock and Kirk have dealt with being apart for so long?
What else could have happened in the Second Five Year Mission? What's your take on this? Go wild![5]
The In-between YearsWhat happens in between the missions in each of the films? Time goes by between all the movies. And we'd love to see what those weeks, months or even years were filled with ... Was Kirk an Admiral and hating it, or ... lo and behold - was he good at it?
Was Spock teaching at Starfleet Academy?
Were they living together?
What happened after The Undiscovered Country and how could Spock and Kirk have been so distant in the beginning of that movie? Were they having a lover's tiff ... or? What?
Or ... yes, tickle our fantasies with your own thoughts of these times when we didn't see Kirk and Spock on screen.[5]
