Fans most often use the term Kanto Trio (関東トリオ) to describe the group formed by trainers Red (レッド), Green Oak (オーキド・グリーン, Ookido Green), and Leaf (リーフ Leaf; also commonly known as ブルー Blue)—the young trainers who became the champions of the Kanto region, the first setting of the Pokémon games, which started the Pokémon franchise.[1]

"Kanto Trio" may also be used to refer to other trios of Kanto characters, but the gameverse trio of Red & Green & Leaf is often understood to be the Kanto Trio. On Pixiv, the 関東トリオ tag refers to the gameverse Kanto Trio, while the マサラ組 tag refers to the Pokémon Adventures manga version of the trio.

Background

Generation I of the Pokémon series has high nostalgia and historic value for fans. Red and Green are honored as the ones who started it all. While Leaf appeared later as the female playable protagonist in the Gen I remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, and interacted together in a game for the first time in Pokémon Masters all the way in 2023, many fans have been happy to include her as a representative of the Gen I games.

The gameverse Kanto Trio owes some of its popularity to the version of the Kanto Trio that has appeared in the manga series adaptation Pokémon Adventures (also known as Pokéspe) since 1997. In both canon and common fanon, the gameverse Kanto Trio and Pokéspe Kanto Trio are distinct from one another in personalities and backstories, but the association has influenced the popularity all the same.

Notable fanon and tropes

  • Childhood Friends
  • Since Red and Leaf, as alternative protagonists, have the same mother and the same family home, fanon often interprets them as brother and sister. It's equally or more popular for Leaf to be depicted as a childhood friend from a separate family.
  • Alola - Red and Green's appearance in Pokémon Sun and Moon (2016) kickstarted unprecedented popularity in the Kanto Trio. Red and Green briefly appear as opponents in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, visibly unchanged from their appearances in FireRed and LeafGreen and HeartGold and SoulSilver. When they appeared as visibly older adults with updated designs in Sun and Moon, fans began coming up with their own headcanons for how Leaf would look alongside them and to explain why she wasn't present with them. Fueled by inspiration from the wildly popular Pokémon species variants trend of the 2010s and the canon Alolan regional variants of Pokémon, there was an outpouring of fan art and fan comics starring the Kanto Trio, amassing millions of views.
