JKL is the collective name for collaborative vids made by Jill, Kay, Kathy, and Lynn C. (in various combinations and groupings).
History
Jill had been vidding since 1987 and began teaching Kay how to vid in 1995. They made over a dozen vids together for fandoms such as Wiseguy, Highlander, and X-Files. Meanwhile, Lynn had learned vidding from Gayle F and Tashery Shannon and had made solo vids such as "We Could Leave Right Now," by Oysterband, for Highlander.
The roots of JKL go back to the late 1990s, when Lynn and Kay first collaborated on a Highlander vid (Duncan/Methos to Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me") when they both lived in the New York City area. Kay also helped Lynn with "Love Shack," a multimedia vid.
By 2000, Jill, Kay and Lynn had all moved to California. Lynn helped Jill and Kay complete their Buffy the Vampire Slayer vid to The Who's "My Generation," and the three collaborated on two more vids after that: "When I'm Up I Can't Get Down," by Oysterband, for Once a Thief (their last-ever VCR vid), and another Buffy vid, "She's Moved On," also by Oysterband (their first-ever computer vid). In addition, Jill worked with Lynn and Sandy (Sandy_Herrold) on their Roswell vid, "Let Me In," by Save Ferris, and Kay worked with Lynn on a Stargate SG-1 vid, "It Must Be Obvious," by Pet Shop Boys.
After building her vidding computer, Lynn made more solo vids, such as Oysterband's "In Your Eyes" for Stargate SG-1 and "Lowlands" for Star Wars. She moved to France in 2001 but continued making vids there and in Seattle until 2003, such as Third Eye Blind's "Motorcycle Drive By" for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "This is the Place" for Once a Thief, and J Ralph's "One Million Miles Away" for The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. After 2003, she stopped vidding.
Kathy had been vidding as Justine Bennet with Morgan Dawn for several years and had made some solo VCR vids. She built a vidding computer and she, Jill and Kay made their first vid together: "Friction," by The Church, for Stargate SG-1. They went on to make several more vids together in pairs or as a trio until 2006, when Kathy's involvement in vidding waned. The last vid made by Jill, Kay, and Kathy was a multimedia vid for VividCon 2006 called "Pants." After that, Jill and Kay continued making vids on their own, and collaborated on the Peacemakers vid, "Hard Times Come Again No More," for VividCon 2008.
In 2001, Jill, Kay, and Kathy released a compilation tape of their vids, including vids made with Lynn and Lynn's solo vids. When they had to come up with a name for the compilation tape, Lynn suggested "JKL." (This is not only their initials but also the back/stop/forward keys in some editing software.) To fill out the tape, they added a few vids from friends, and the tape was released as "JKL & Friends." It was later digitized and re-released on DVD with additional vids. In 2006, they started a website to host the "JKL" vids at http://pteropus.com/.
