From Jeanne Gold on The Rise and Fall of the Fanzine:

I was brought into the world of fandom by Jean Curley, who introduced me to fan fiction. I had been writing fan fiction for years, I just never knew anyone else wrote it too. And much like George McFly, I never let anyone read my stories. Until I met others like me. We started off just trading stories, then stacks of copied stories that were being passed around. The first fan fiction stories I read were for the British series The Professionals. Both gen fic and slash.

I started in the publishing business with a newsletter called The Rat Patrol Dispatch. My first fanzine was MacGyverisms, which enjoyed a run of five issues. From there, I published a zine or two a year. I’m a writer also, but I seem to only be able to write for one fandom at a time. So whatever I was writing was usually the zine I did. During rehearsals for a play, I met a kindred spirit: Cynthia Boris. We discovered we were both fangirls and we both enjoyed writing. Although much to Cynthia’s dismay, I wrote in script format at the time. She is the one who got me writing in story format. Thank goodness! We’ve been friends ever since, and eventually, we formed Golden Lily Press, producing zines for our favorite shows such as Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Stargate SG-1, and Magnificent Seven.

From fanfic reader to writer to fanzine publisher – Jeanne’s been involved in the fanzine world from every angle. She always took her job as editor and publisher very seriously. She didn’t just publish whatever she could get her hands on. She curated and edited and helped those who submitted stories become better writers. When you buy one of her zines, you know you’re getting quality work and that was the secret to her success and the reason she’s won numerous fan awards for her work. Sadly, this is the first year in a long time that she’s not debuting a new zine at MediaWest. Truly, the end of an era. [2]
