Interstitial is a Smallville futurefic in which Clark Kent is living in Metropolis, working alongside Lois Lane at The Daily Planet. He has not taken on the Superman persona; in fact, we discover along with Clark that he is beginning to lose his powers, in fits and starts. This means Clark is able to be injured (though minorly, and temporarily) in a car accident with OFC Amanda Hayes, a senator's daughter. Lex had left Smallville the summer before Clark's senior year, after Clark lied one too many times about his powers, but after seeing television news coverage of the crash, Lex brings himself back into Clark's life.
Summary: He doesn't know why this is happening.
The story has prequels (Angry Greeks and Name us a King), a missing scene (Leftovers), commentary by Punk[1] and Elandrialore, a cast page[2], a fanfic cover by Jed, a wallpaper by Allypoops and podfic by Cath.[3]

Recs and Reviews
Interstitial by Punk - More future-fic. What if Clark's powers began to fade away? [4]
Clark's losing his powers and he doesn't know why. After years of not speaking to Lex, an accident throws them once again into each other's lives. Lex through Clark's perspective is so sexy and in control. Once again, Lex's protective instincts make him worry about Clark even after years without contact. Also, read the DVD commentary when you're finished with the actual story. It adds a lot to the existing text.[5]
Clark's powers start to fade just as he and Lex, having been apart for many years, start to rekindle their friendship. Interesting plot and characterization, romance, and fascinatingly subtle mood setting that manages to be elegiac and yet celebratory at the same time. This story gives you that fizzy I'm-playing-hooky-from-school feeling. And now it has an equally excellent, poignant prequel, Name Us A King.[6]
I also liked Punk Maneuverability's Interstitial -- Future fic, but without the trappings. Lots of things to love in this, but my favorite was the reminder of how little our Clark understands about his powers, and how vulnerable that makes him. (I mean, seriously, for all he knows, the next step is a third eye, or a extra limbs...) [7]
