An imageboard is a type of website where users post images to share with the community. (Sometimes other media such as flash animations can be uploaded, but the majority focus is images.)

There are two subtypes of websites which are referred to as an "imageboard":

1. A tagged and searchable art archive

2. A 4chan-style forum which allows uploading images with posts but lacks image tags and searching

Different imageboards have different standards or scope for what images they allow; for example E-shuushuu focuses on cute anime girls with no NSFW or otherwise objectionable content, Yande.re is for high-resolution artwork only, Konachan is for wallpapers, etc.

Imageboards are commonly used to share fanart, usually without the artist's prior approval. "Archive"-type imageboard communities make an attempt to indicate the artist through tagging and/or a link back to the source URL. Some imageboards also have a policy of removing images if the artist contacts the admins to request such removal. The Booru Project is a website which allows fans to host their own boorus and lists popular boorus.

Archive-type imageboards may also be called "boorus", a term derived from Danbooru, a popular imageboard that debuted in 2005.

Archive-type imageboards also commonly have a voting/ranking/favoriting system for images, and the ability to comment on each image.
