I (created from fantasies) exist solely for you is a Steve/Tony story by Mizzy. It was created for the Marvel Universe Big Bang 2012. The author warns that this is identity porn without porn.
Summary: Six years ago, without the Avengers Initiative there to save the day, scientist Dr. Eric Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, the almighty demi-god Thor was lost to a terrible storm, and vigilante Iron Man – spotted with a nuclear weapon trying to take advantage of the situation – was forever labelled an enemy of SHIELD. This is a comic book office AU, where Steve is defrosted a year too late, Thor has forgotten who he is, and no one knows Tony is Iron Man. Also includes: office pranks, inappropriate post-it notes, and superheroes who like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.
Two big bang artists created fanart for the story, le_prince_lutin[1] and koexmoxnakushi.[2]
Recs and Reviews
premise of this au pt 1: steve was defrosted a year later, after the whole invasion thing. premise of this au pt 2: therefore the avengers didn't get shield support; they're working for fury (and stark) directly and covertly, and their cover story is the comic "the retaliators", produced by "stark comics", at which they all work.[3]
One of the most fascinating AU's that turned a shit storm of a situation into a happy ending that I've had the pleasure of encountering. :DMemorable events:
- - Tony Stark never revealed himself to be Iron Man. Instead, he lived a life of recluse after the events of IM1
- - Steve defrosted a year late (exactly one year after the Chitauri invasion). As a consequence, Dr. Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, Thor lost his memories in his grief (along with his powers), and Iron Man was labelled as a villain
- - Steve suspects that Iron Man is not a villain and he may or may not be developing a budding romance with him. The amount of flirting during battle certainly doesn't hurt
- - Green Goblin keeps attacking the Stark Tower
- - Steve gets sent to work undercover for Stark Creative as part of a comics creation team to keep an eye on things. He discovers more than he bargains for. He also develops a massive crush for the ever-so-suave, Tony Stark.
- - Shit hits the fan because Green Goblin is a crazy bastard.
- - Happy ending :D[4]
I kind of love how this mixes the MCU into an office AU. It’s like the two stories got mixed together in a blender to make a delicious smoothie of a fic. I love how it builds up not only Tony and Steve’s relationship but also his relationship with the other Avengers.[6]

Retaliators cover, fanart by koexmoxnakushi. The characters in the story work undercover as comic artists who publish the comic The Retaliators which is rumored to be a thinly fictionalized version of the adventures of The Avengers, a group of vigilantes based in New York. One of the Retaliators' adversaries is Captain Awesome (aka Captain America), who is featured on this cover of the comic. The Retaliators are shown as reflections on Captain Awesome's shield.
Metal Girl, fanart by le_prince_lutin. The fictional counterpart of Iron Man is Metal Girl. She and Captain Awesome are shipped by the fans of the comic as "Awesometal" because there are quite a few sparks flying between them. They have their own superhero catchphrase exchange. I'll get you next time, Metal Girl'—'Not if I get you first, Awesome. There is also a quite active Captain America/Iron Man RPF fandom in this story, but Steve tries not to think about that.
Quetzal, fanart by le_prince_lutin. The Retaliators have a wider geographic/ethnic spread than The Avengers which is thanks to the artists who came up with these versions of the characters.[7] The premise of the comic is that The Retaliators battle villains "while trying to convince the civilian Ron Drake that he's actually the mysterious god Quetzal, aka "Sore" [...] Ron must gain his memories back so he can find his Magic Staff, Murmur, before the bad guys figure out how to get hold of it and use the power for themselves."
