Hope Mikaelson is a character on The Originals, whose conception was a major plot point and raison d'etre for the majority of the characters to stay in New Orleans.
Canon
Hope's existence came to be due to a "nature's loophole", where Klaus's werewolf genes overruled his vampire side. As a child of a werewolf and The Original Hybrid, Hope is a first natural hybrid. Her blood can be used to turn a werewolf into a hybrid (very much like the blood of a human doppelgänger). During season 1, her hybrid status was considered by the witches as a threat to the nature's balance and they were bent on killing her even before she was born. However this is later proven to be incorrect, and it's because Esther had made a pact with her sister, Dahlia, that she promised her the first born child of every generation. Due to this, her first born child Freya was taken away from her. If Hope didn't die, Esther fears that it would awaken Dahlia. Everyone believes that Hope was killed in the first season, however, her aunt Rebekah takes her away in order to protect her.

At the very beginning, when the concept was introduced, a lot of fans were referring to Hope as a miracle baby, some did so with negative implications. Certain Fix-It fics were written denying Hayley's pregnancy, making it into some sort of scheme designed to manipulate Klaus.

- Princess Mikaelson - in a play on Klaus's obsession with becoming "King of New Orleans", fans like to refer to Hope as Princess Mikaelson (a term especially popular before she was a named character).
