Mikael is a recurring character on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.

Canon

He's a Viking, who traveled with his family to the New World. They settled near a werewolf settlement. To protect himself and his family, he had his wife cast a spell to turn their family into vampires, thus creating the Original Vampires. He soon realized/decided (depending which character you consult) that their children turned into monsters (after they gave into their bloodlust) and should be stopped and killed. He then proceeded to spend the next 1000 years hunting them down and trying to kill them (and with them, the entire vampire population).

Fandom

Mikael is a character fandom loves to hate. Everybody acknowledges that Mikael is a terrible person, though some (a lot?) fans really love him and what he adds to the dynamic on the show(s).

In some fanworks Mikael is bashed quite openly.

There aren't many fanworks with Mikael as a main focus, but he is present as a supporting character in fanworks about The Original Family.

Last Name

In canon, Mikael is not given a last name.

In Scandinavian tradition, his son's are given a last name of Mikaelson. To follow the contemporary convention and (probably) not to confuse the fans, Rebekah is referred to as Mikaelson as well. When organizing a ball in Mystic Falls, the invitations are to the "Mikaelsons Family" Ball. This made some fans call Mikael, Mikael Mikaelson.

Other fans either make up a different, new name, or leave Mikael without a last name.

Common Pairings

Mikael is not a character that's shipped. If any, the most popular pairing is his canon relationship with Esther. Sometimes, he is written in non-con pairings, sometimes with his kids,

Fanon and Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Villain - most often, if present, Mikael is portrayed as a villain of the story.
  • Abuse - he is often portrayed as an abusive father, especially in works where Klaus is the main character.
