Reception and popularity
Goku is probably one of the most famous anime characters of all time, with a lot of fanworks about being made all over the world and he being the main inspiration for many characters from other anime like Naruto and Luffy; despite that, he can be a bit divisive in the fandom. Some think that he is a boring protagonist that doesn't have a strong character arc, while others find him too stupid or annoying and prefer other characters in the series like Vegeta.
Other element of his character that became controversial with fans over the years is his relationship with his wife and his kids, with it becoming wildly popular to joke about him being a bad and/or neglectful father, and that Piccolo is a better parent to Gohan through the series, with the parody series Dragon Ball Z Abridged being responsable for popularizing some of those jokes, though it was already a common criticism of his character beforehand.
Fanon and tropes
It is very common to see stories about him getting to meet his parents, Bardock and Gine, as he never learns about them in the show itself outside of Spin-offs. Before his mother was revealed in Dragon Ball Minus, it was also common to see people create Original Characters to represent her, with one of the more popular being Hanasia from the webcomic Dragon Ball Multiverse.
He's a very popular character to include in stories or debates about Powerscaling or other types of crossover fights, to the point it is pretty much a meme to ask if any powerful character from any series could defeat Goku. His most common opponents are usually Superman (who has a very similar backstory and powers to him, and was likely an inspiration to the creation of his character), Sonic the Hedgehog (that has a Super form inspired by the Super Saiyan), and Saitama from One Punch Man (who's also a very powerful character that is used on debates about the power of other fictional characters).
Shipping
One of the most popular ships involving Goku is the canonical ship between him and Chi-Chi, named Gochi, with another very popular ship being Kakavege, that pairs him with Vegeta. Other ships that can be seen sometimes pair him up with Bulma and Suno, a little girl that appears in the Red Ribbon saga.
