Canon background
He is the prince of the Saiyan race, a proud and powerful warrior race. Vegeta starts as an antagonist when he first appears in Dragon Ball Z, arriving on Earth with the goal of collecting the Dragon Balls to gain immortality. At that time, he is a ruthless, arrogant warrior, driven by his desire for power and the pride of being the prince of the Saiyans. He considers Goku (who he always calls by his Saiyan name, Kakarot) his rival, a fellow Saiyan raised on Earth, and their dynamic serves as a central element of his character development.
As the series progresses, Vegeta slowly shifts from a villain to an anti-hero and eventually a hero, though his pride and rivalry with Goku remain constant.
