Trunks is a character from Dragon Ball Z. There are two versions of the same character, one that came from the future to warn them about the dangers ahead and the Trunks that grew up in a timeline where future Trunks' influence changed things.

Canon

He appears for the first time after the Namek Arc as a mysterious youth that can transform into a super saiyajin and cut Frieza and his father in two with a sword. Trunks shocked the audience when he revealed to be the son of Bulma and Vegeta that came from a dystopian future timeline where new enemies had killed everyone except himself and his mother. This revelation occurred during a time when Vegeta, previously portrayed as a villain, had switched sides into an uneasy alliance with the Z Fighters to combat a mutual enemy. Despite living in Capsule Corp, Bulma's house, Vegeta exhibited little interest in romance, while Bulma was in a relationship with Yamcha at the time. This caused fans to speculate how things would change, for Trunks to be born in two years and a half from that moment.

Fandom

In the Dragon Ball fandom, fans typically refer to the Trunks from the future timeline as either "Mirai Trunks" or "Future Trunks" to distinguish him from the Trunks of the present timeline. The Trunks from the present timeline is often simply referred to as "Trunks" or "Present Trunks" to avoid confusion.

In the earliest days of the fandom you would often find people referring to both of them as Torankusu, which is an literal translation of his Japanese name that doesn't take on account the fact that his family has names themed after underwear in English.

Shipping

The most popular pairings for Future Trunks are usually the ship of him and Son Gohan or Android 18, though they are both also rather controversial due to the age difference between the characters. Dragon Ball Super made canon the pairing of him with Mai (Trunks/Mai), but it is also divisive with fans since Mai is a lot older than him, but appears younger thanks to a wish her and the rest of the Pilaf Gang made to the Dragon Balls.

The version of Trunks from the present is usually paired with diferent people: His most popular pairings are usually him with Son Goten (Truten), and him with Pan (Trunks/Pan) in stories inspired by Dragon Ball GT. Another ship that is less popular but still common is between him and Marron (Trunks/Marron).
