The Original Post
is there any fanfic about dd and ga out there? Is this considered heresy around here? I can't help it; it would love to read some.

That's disgusting.
One man's puke is another man's candy.
I suspect many people think about these things. But most of us don't write them down. (Which is just as well, I'd say, because if I were GA or DD and found certain stories, I'd be disturbed.) To answer the question -- I have rarely seen any kind of serious fanfic about DD and GA, and what I've seen has been kinda scary. (That stalker thing, not to mention that the usual story romance between DD and GA now usually includes Tea breaking up with DD.) :(
However, there is a longstanding tradition of writing humorous fics about the writing staff, actors and crew. (These are less disturbing, although generally pretty odd.) There have also been numerous crossover fics in which one or both of our intrepid agents end up in Vancouver on the set, or vicey versey. (These are usually funnier than a crutch.) I suspect pointers to these stories could be provided more easily. (There was an archive up awhile ago....) -- Maureen, attempting to be helpful, and wondering uneasily if Arthurian legends started out this way.
don't know about heresy, but it's generally considered to be in poor taste. These are real people, after all, and people whom none of us know personally. I think that their rights to privacy demand that we leave this sort of speculation to the non-written realms of imagination
Ouch! I dunno about fanfic ALL about DD and GA, but there was a very well written piece that crossed Mulder and Scully's lives with DD and GA .... It focused more on the X-Files rather than the stars' personal lives (why would you want fanfic about their personal lives anyway?) Cannot remember the author for the life of me, but the title was "And the Winner Is...", I believe.
It really is bad form. Especially if it involves sex, torture or any other nastiness that we enjoy reading when it involves Mulder and Scully. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are real people.....not fictional characters.....who have access to these newsgroups just as you and I do. What if one of their asistants [sic] read the newsgroup? Now how would you feel if you came across a story where *things* were done to you? Would it freak you out? It would me. It is very easy to forget that these two are "real people". Not initials on a computor [sic] screen. I always remember this when I read crap about either one of them printed in the various newsgroups. They are *human*......not gods or goddesses up on a pedestal that do no wrong and have no feelings.
Cant say that I know of any... Although the thought makes me ill
I don't think its disgusting at all !! There is a cute one out there about DD, A and Piper !!
Okay I didn't mean at all what my message seemed to be saying. I am not one who likes to read any kind of smut at all; I don't even read R-rated fanfic. When I asked about DD and GA fanfic I had in mind some cute little story about what it must be like on the set, playing the roles, practicing parts, Piper running around, and the rediculousness [sic] that must go on. I meant my request innocently; I have no desire to invade these peoples' personal lives or be a threat to them in any way. I respect them as much as all the other people I don't know who I see walking down the street. But I also would like to keep an even greater distance between myself and them, since their space is more often invaded. I take back my former request. Please disregard.
A fairly recent story (and the longest one I've read) is "The Best Performance". It's actually a XF/real-life crossover. I know there are a few others like that. Then, there are a couple of stories that have Mulder and Scully watching as DD and GA win Golden Globes, SAGs, Emmys. I think I can dig those up fairly easily if you want. Finally, I recall one story about a party at the end of the show (from a dog's point of view?) and another about DD and GA having a relationship before Piper is born (which was not very well received). I'm not sure where I can find those, but you can ask around. Let me know if you'd like me to dig up the stories -- but go and read "The Best Performance" in the meantime (posted in August, I think).
I must say, I couldn't quite figure out why the first two responses to this question were so harsh. I don't read M/S torture, and while the occasional MSR with sex is always around, I CERTAINLY never thought that GA and DD would do such a thing. I mean, while there are many of us 'Shippers around, GA and DD are two VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE from the characters they portray, and the thought of a serious G/D relationship story never even crossed my mind. So while I now understand that the genre could be seriously misused, I think that the idea of an INNOCENT GA/DD fanfic could be interesting. I adore the one on Gossamer supposedly written by GA, admitting that she liked reading fanfic. Something like that, fun and easygoing, should be as well-received as any other story.
XXX-files was mine, written originally with the intention of submitting it for (don't kill me) Penthouse Magazine's "Celebrity Fantasy" feature...and it's no longer available at Gossamer, per my own request. To quote from my fanfic page:
- Over the years since I initially wrote "The XXX-Files," I've received more feedback about it than all three of my other stories combined. Not all of it was good, either. There has been more than a bit of backlash in recent months about actor fic - and I have to admit that I'm beginning to see the point. These people - indeed, anyone who has ever worn the uneasy title of "celebrity" - are entitled to privacy, just as you and I are.
Getting back to the original question, though.... Am I the only person left who's been here long enough to remember "The Adventures of Chris Carter & Co."? I was without net access for a period in the middle of this round-robin of epic proportions, and in that time it got REALLY weird - but the beginning of it all was hysterical.
- "The XXX-Files" was removed from the Gossamer Archives with their July update. I am considering removing it from this page, as well, and leaving it as an exclusive to Bobbi's Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation site. I would be exceedingly grateful to y'all if you would write me and let me know your thoughts on my decision - whether you think I'm overreacting or doing too little, too late.
I don't think it's disgusting either, especially if it's not done in poor taste. I hate to admit it, well actually i don't care to admit that i like the stories, one in particular, David goes to marry Tea` but chooses Gillian instead. And Piper calling him Uncle David is adorable
Because they're not OURS, I suggested people used a little restraint. And besides, if people want to write fiction about DD and GA, why not? Hell, the National Enquirer does it all the time, although they do allege, unlike fanfic writers, that what they write actually happened (and have happily been sued for it from time to time). Anyway, as long as said fiction is as playful and affectionate in tone as the one described above, what's the harm? The only problems, ethical, legal or moral, would only arise if Dark Nascent chooses to participate...
See those are the type stories many have a problem with though. Cute parodies of the Emmys are one thing; but writing true fiction using real, living, breathing humans as characters can be dangerous ground. We can write whatever we like about Mulder and Scully *because* they are not real. (Contrary to what an occasional crazy person around here might imply.<G>) David, Gillian, Tea, and Piper are real though. Writing fiction about REAL people is lying. That's why celebs sue the Enquirer. How would you like it if someone wrote a story about you dumping your boyfriend for some guy with whom you appeared in the school play? How would you like it if the story put your boyfriend in a bad light? How would you like it if you read a story where you preferred some man your mother worked with to your own father? That may very well happen to Piper some day, because such stories *have* already been written. Yes, real people do at times appear in works of fiction. Doctorow's "Ragtime" immediately comes to mind. I think if a writer decides to incorporate real people into a work of fiction, *extreme* care must be taken not to misrepresent those people.
This is a free country and I can damn well read what I want and the fan fic writers will write what they damn want !!! This is America , not China !
Actually, *this* is Usenet. *You* are in the US. Not everyone here is.I'm not talking about anyone's rights, or laws. That gets thrown about here way too much already. As my father (a lawyer) always told me, anyone can sue someone else over *anything.* However, I very seriously doubt we'll ever see any lawsuits over fanfic written here. Why? Ultimately, lawsuits are about money and there's no money in fanfic. (Oh I'm sure there are tons of people here jumping at the bit to disagree with me on this issue. Can I make one request? Can we just drop it? It was not my intention to start another law thread here ok?)
Ok I'll be straight with you. Of course, you are free to read and write what you want. I also know you are just a kid, not a crazy stalker out to hurt Tea Leoni or kidnap Piper or *anything* like that. I know girls like you fantasizing about celebrities is generally harmless and basically normal. I also know you will eventually outgrow it. I was just trying to explain to you why certain fantasies (such as GA/DD romances, something bad happening to Tea, stories about Piper ... a child whose mother has been said to freak out over the idea of strangers having photographs of her) are just .... well not NICE. I was just trying to explain to you why some adults really don't like such stories. That's all, really.
I am not a kid ! for your info I am almost 44 years old and a smart bored housewife ! <G> I have two teenage girls and one will become 16 tomorrow ! She is in a gifted writing class and a much better writer than me !!
For what it's worth, it wasn't my intention to talk *down* to anyone. I still feel certain fantasies about real people are ill-advised. I still believe those who engage in such fantasies tend to be young people who don't realize why they are potentially disrespectful. Believe it or not, it was my intention, in expressing this belief, to counteract those who expressed that such fantasies were "disgusting." Frankly, I felt "disgusting" was rather harsh as most of these stories *are* written by young people who don't realize the implications. I apologized to Harriet in e-mail (because that's where I read the first two posts) for my bone-headed mis-assumption. Now, I'll apologize here. I sincerely apologize to Harriet. Sometimes a thread goes on long and it's late, you get mixed up who said what. I think I must have mixed up some of Harriet's statements in this thread with someone else's posts which may have referenced the poster's age... or maybe I'm just soft in the brain.<G> That's not an excuse, just an explanation. Anyway, it was my mistake, and I am sorry.
It's true that you're welcome to write, read, and think what you like. But fiction written about real, living people -- well, it's a different matter than fanfic. Mulder and Scully aren't real; while we may appropriate them, without permission, to fall in love or die or burst into song, everyone involved understands that they're not real. DD and GA are real -- and they deserve a certain respect. Recently -- and forgive me for even mentioning this in another thread -- a flame war here on atxfc burst into "fanfics" that intentionally, and cruelly, parodied various real people on the board. The parties involved didn't appreciate it one bit, and I doubt DD and GA would feel differently. If you really like these actors, respect their right to have their lives portrayed truly and accurately.
As long as the fanfic you wish to read about DD and GA is advertised as *fiction* (no such disclaimer, unfortunately, can ever be found in truly scurrilous media such as the National Enquirer), then no harm could possibly come of it, unless the content were questionable. That's where the "is this a nice thing to do" question should come in.
Yes, people have the right to read and write what they want. IMHO, I don't care how "sweet" a story about DD and GA is, when it involves real people, it's just not right--regardless of whether the content is questionable or not.
fanfic you wish to read about DD and GA is advertised as *fiction* (no such disclaimer, unfortunately, can ever be found in truly scurrilous media such as the National Enquirer), then no harm could possibly come of it, unless the content were questionable. The above statement is utter balderdash and breath-takingly arrogant. Who the heck are you, or any of us, to judge what DD, GA, Piper etc. etc. would deem to be questionable content ? Oh, we know, you're the keeper of the holy Mulder & Scully flame, and we *must* *not* bend canon or explore aspects of the characters that are not seen on the show (incidentally, I don't think we've seen Scully pee on the show or in the movie, so I guess we have to assume that she never needs to). Yet according to you, we can write what the fuck we like about *real* *living* *people* and as long as we label it as fiction - that's OK ? Methinks you have your priorities a tad skewed.
Congrats, though, I had thought that surely by now you had plumbed the absolute depths of idiocy - clearly I was wrong.
Yeah, poor down-trodden you. Really, my heart just bleeds, and afterall, you have been so nice to everyone.
If you (and I mean the generic "you", not you personally H.) want GA, DD, CC etc. etc. fic - and I *really* don't want to think too much about why you would - go ahead and form your own NG - this one is for fic based on the characters & events depicted in the x-files. You could call it alt.privacy.invasion.gadd.really.im.sure.they.wont.mind.
Recently on the Fox Fanforum, its webmaster Reaper said that they did not allow fanfic on their pages, as such unauthorized writings are legally problematical for Twentieth-Century Fox and they'd prefer that people e-mailed such fic to each other instead of using a public forum. So maybe we should rename this ng alt.copyright.infringement.fox1013.if.they.mind.who.gives.a.sh*t.
I have no idea how DD or GA would feel about a " story " of them in a fan fic ? I think GA might be annoyed by it but DD probably wouldn't give a s**t . He has been known in the past not to care what us X-philes think !
When fiction is written about a real person, there most certainly are restraints about what you can write. Especially with Piper. GA and DD are public figures, and as such, one could conceivably, have less of an argument against it. Piper is a *child*. A CHILD, and one who should not have words put in her mouth, should *not* find a story about her liking DD better than her daddy on the internet one day, should NOT... well you get the picture. My father is a politician who is fairly widely known in my home state, and has a controversial stand on many issues. People always assumed, without talking to me first, that my opinions were exactly the same as his, which I found incredibly frustrating because we differ on most things. I can only imagine how much worse it must be to type your name in a search engine and come up with stories about yourself that have you saying and doing things that you never did, and never even thought about doing.
Please, leave real people, their marriages, and their children out of fiction.
When questioned about how she felt about people cutting out pictures of her head and pasting them on naked bodies, GA chuckled and said, "It's not me. Whatever gets their rocks off, I guess. I'd be bothered if someone I trusted posted a real picture of my body, but those paste-ups are *not* me." Or something to that effect.I personally find it in poor taste to put "real people" in fiction. Words have power and stories have more power and we already know how hard it is to remember at times whether something is "fanfic canon" or "show canon".... We also know that the porn sites aren't above swiping our stuff and selling it. Writing "fanfiction" about the stars is a really "great" way to perpetuate rumors, even start them. *We* know it's fiction...
I think that what the Enquirer, etc. do is flat-out wrong and hurtful.
So while the stars may not really care, may have the *maturity* to recognize that it's not really, ultimately about them, and while certain public media *don't* have the maturity or the ethics to refrain from doing it, it doesn't mean that it's a kind, mature, ethical, moral, or decent thing to do.
Piper's four. My five year old can read, has an email account, and limited, supervised web access. My 14 year old sister is just getting the hang of surfing the internet and discussion groups and isn't restricted much in where she can go and what she can look at. I know that neither my sister or my daughter would have the emotional maturity and perspective that they'd be comfortable reading fictional stories that portrayed my mom or I in an inappropriate way, and I know that they'd be terribly hurt if someone else put them into a story that way.
No, we can't stop people from reading it. We can't stop people from writing it. And we can't stop them from posting it. But each of us can decide whether or not we're going to show the strength of character to restrain ourselves from creating or increasing a demand for it.
Yeah, humans are voyeuristic... but that doesn't mean that voyeurism is "okay" in any and all circumstances.
So people will keep asking for it, and a large number of us will respond, "Please don't."
It's not about copyright or laws... it's about manners and common decency, that people cannot be prevented from writing or reading such fanfic, anymore than they can be prevented from reading and writing unauthorized fanfic about Mulder and Scully (at least not on the internet). In that regard DD and GA would have little recourse if someone wanted to write stories, either playful or mean-spirited, about them. Again, I think that if people wish to write or read fiction about DD or GA, it would be "a nice thing to do" if they would limit themselves to benign interpretations and make sure in their own writings that it is labeled as fiction. That is self-censorship at its best.
