Fandom March Madness (FMM) is a livejournal community and game where fans vote for favorite fictional characters. The name is a reference to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.

The idea first appeared on typicrobots's livejournal in 2008 and 2009, before moving to its own community of f_march_madness.

Controversy

In 2013, Aja posted an article to The Daily Dot headlined Fandom March Madness grapples with fandom’s diversity issues.[1] The article spotlighted the lack of women in fanworks as well as the lack of representation of characters of color, and included some instances of claims of bullying in the voting comments for FMM.

Fandom March Madness reboot

In 2021, I Met You On LJ relaunched Fandom March Madness with permission from penumbra, typicrobots, and astrofisica, after a five-year hiatus. They made several changes to the format having moved from LiveJournal to Tumblr and Instagram, including changes from the brackets being between characters to being between fandoms and removing the Steel Cage Match round.

On 27 February 2021, they posted the bracket download information and list of Top 64 Fandoms in an announcement post.[2].

On March 30, 2021, they announced that The Old Guard was the final champion, with bracket submitter morethanonepage having submitted the closest full bracket.
