Edward Elric is the protagonist of the manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist. He works along with his younger brother Alphonse Elric to try and bring their mother back through alchemy, which results in the pair altering or losing their bodies altogether and going on a quest to return to normal.
Canon
Edward is the older brother, and he cares very deeply for Alphonse, something that is often explored in fanfic. He can be brash, and hates people bringing up his small stature.

Shipping
In the current fandom landscape the canon pairing of Ed/Winry is fairly popular. In the 2000s when the fandom was dominated by the 2003 anime, this was less true, with both the pairing and the character of Winry herself attracting a lot of bashing. Self-shipping with Ed was popular and may have been a particular venue of bashing.
In terms of slash pairings, Edward is commonly shipped with Roy Mustang (RoyEd), or (in manga/Brotherhood fandom) with Ling Yao (EdLing). Edvy and Elricest were more popular in the heydey of the 2003 anime but still sees some active fans. Edward Elric/Alphonse Heiderich (EdHei) is somewhat popular among fans of the 2003 series sequel movie Conqueror of Shamballa.
