Biography in Wrestling
Dwayne Johnson made his name in World Wrestling Entertainment during the 1990s. He started in the United States Wrestling Association in Memphis, where, as Flex Kavana, he held the USWA World Tag Team Titles twice with Bart Sawyer. He arrived in the then-WWF at Survivor Series in November 1996 as a traditional Face named Rocky Maivia, taken from his father, former wrestler Rocky Johnson, and his maternal grandfather, the late great Hawaiian wrestling legend High Chief Peter Maivia. This character flopped, drawing chants of "Rocky sucks! Rocky sucks!" and was more hated than some of the heels of the time. He turned heel on the August 11, 1997 WWF RAW IS WAR, thus joining The Nation of Domination. The following week, he referred to himself for the first time as "The Rock." Along with deepening his voice and generally improving in the ring, he had to do two big heel turns (joining the NOD in 1997 and joining Vince McMahon's Corporation in 1998) to get the fans to accept him. He is a former 8x WWE World Heavyweight Champion, a 2x WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion, a 5x WWE World Tag Team Champion,[note 1] a former 2x WCW World Heavyweight Champion[note 2] and won the 2000 Royal Rumble.
