History:

One Direction were formed on The X Factor UK by Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell (sometimes less than affectionately nicknamed Salmon Cowbell by the Directioners) on July 23rd, 2010.

It's unclear what the first project was.

Past projects:

The 2010s:

  • In 2011, there was a fan-made remix of Gotta Be You circulated. Louis Tomlinson tweeted about it. [1]
  • In 2012, there was a 1D flash mob in Los Angeles, California. I currently have no detail on that aside from this WordPress post.[2]
  • #1DWalkFinland happened in Finland in 2014, gaining attention of Niall Horan.[3]
  • The You & I Fan Video Project happened, which actually became a real thing in 2014. [4]
  • The San Siro Fan Project, in which the fans in attendance at One Direction's Where We Are Tour show at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy created a sign saying "We Are 1D Family".[5]
  • There was a project for Zayn Malik's birthday in 2014 that consisted in raising over $10,000 for the British Asian Trust, a charity Zayn was an ambassador of (and may still be).[6]
  • Project No Control, which happened in 2015 after Zayn left the band. It consisted of the fandom self-pushing fan-favorite song, No Control, track eight off their fourth album, FOUR, as a single and streaming it. The project gained attention of Louis and Liam. [7]
  • In 2015, the fandom got a fan advert in Billboard Magazine. All four boys, a long with honorary 1D member, Late Late Show host James Corden, tweeted about it.[8]
  • #ProjectHome happened in 2016, which was about streaming the song Home, an underrated deep cut that many regard as a masterpiece. This project caught the attention of Liam and Louis.[9]
  • For Liam's birthday in 2016, the fandom raised money for a Wolverhampton charity called The Way | Wolverhampton Youth Zone. We got a Wolverhampton newspaper article about our efforts.[10]
  • Project What Makes You Beautiful happened in 2018, where the fandom got the What Makes You Beautiful Music Video to one billion views on YouTube.
  • The Drag Me Down Project which was centered on getting the Drag Me Down Music Video to a billion views on YouTube and started in 2019 and ended in March of 2022 when it was fulfilled.

The 2020s:

  • At some point in like 2020, the Directioners decided to stream What A Feeling for a time. It's unknown if there was a goal, or what it was if there was one.
  • The Sign Of The Times Project happened in 2022, and was centered around getting the music video for Harry Styles debut solo song Sign Of The Time to a billion views. It was fulfilled in August 2022.
  • The Bigger Than Me Project, which happened on September 2nd, 2022 and was centered on getting Louis Tomlinson's Bigger Than Me Music Video to one million views in it's first day of release.
  • The Faith In The Future Project happened in late 2022 where the fandom tried to trend #TeamFaith or #TeamFuture depending on what country you were in in order to promote Louis Tomlinson's album, Faith In The Future. There was once an article about this, but it's seemingly been deleted.
  • The Story Of My Life Project which was centered around getting the Story Of My Life Music Video to a billion views on YouTube and happened from 2022-2024. It was fulfilled on January 21st, 2024, which was ironically Louis Tomlinson's son Freddie's birthday.
  • The Best Song Ever Project, which took over popularity after Story Of My Life hit a billion views, even though it somewhat existed before that. It's centered on getting the Best Song Ever Music Video to a billion views and has yet to have been fulfilled. At the time, it was the fourth most viewed video (following What Makes You Beautiful, Drag Me Down and Story Of My Life) but has since been surpassed by both One Thing and Night Changes. This project has been going seriously for a year, and it's unclear when it will end.
