Daphne Greengrass is a character in Harry Potter. She is the older sister of Astoria Greengrass, which makes her Draco's sister-in-law and Scorpius' aunt. She's also in the same year as the famous Harry Potter. She is a popular Blank Slate in the fandom.
Canon Overview
She took her O.W.L.s at the same time as Hermione. This is, in fact, her only mention in the books:
Hermione’s name was called. Trembling, she left the chamber with Anthony Goldstein, Gregory Goyle, and Daphne Greengrass. Students who had already been tested did not return afterward, so Harry and Ron had no idea how Hermione had done.The Order of the Phoenix, by J. K. Rowling
Daphne is a pureblood Slytherin and the Greengrass family is one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight families.[1] She was originally named Queenie and her surname suggests her family is from East Anglia.[2]
Fanon
Daphne is often described in fanon as an "Ice Queen": aloof, intelligent, and calculating.[3] The Greengrass family is typically described as being "neutral" in magical conflicts, and is used to provide an alternative in the story to Voldemort and Dumbledore. Tracey Davis, a character that was not mentioned in books and is only mentioned in additional material, is usually her best friend in fanon.
Some Reddit users have opined that Daphne Greengrass became popular because Blaise Zabini was revealed to be male in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the fandom needs a replacement for a female Slytherin blank slate. According to __Pers on Reddit, Jeconais's Perfect Situations (2005) is the fic that kick-started the HP/DG "Ice Queen" trope.[4]
She is thought by some to have appeared in the movies as an unnamed Slytherin girl, resulting in her fanon appearance as blonde-haired and blue-eyed.[5]
Daphne herself tends to play one of two roles in shipfics:
- In Harry Potter/Daphne Greengrass (or "Haphne") fics, Daphne is Harry's romantic partner, and Draco (if he appears in a notable way) plays an antagonistic role, trying to break them up or otherwise "win" Daphne for himself, possibly through the use of a marriage contract.
- In Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy ("Dramione") fics, she is Hermione's rival for Draco's affections. Often, she is Draco's an ex-girlfriend (or even ex-wife).
