Reactions and Reviews
This is a sequel to As New Wine and With Hoops of Steel, but stands well on its own. It is not necessary to have read the first two. 1 enjoyed it best of the three. It is in two parts, each part being independent of the other. Part 1 is not for the squeamish, it deals with an infection which causes raging dysentery and is quite explicit in its medical and hygienic implications. Incredibly, though, the story is written with great sensitivity and gives insight into Christine Chapel's character, a strength that we do not often see. In spite of the subject matter, I enjoyed the story very much and found it more realistic that the usual 'lying-in Sickbay-in-a-coma-and-looking-beau-tiful' type of illness. If it is possible to write tastefully about diarrhoea, Meg Wright has done it! In Part 2, Kirk and Spock assist a Vulcan team in tracing some missing scientists. [1]
