The Chitauri are a shapeshifter alien race in the fictional Ultimate Marvel Universe, and are considered the counterparts to the Skrull.
Canon
Chitauri's first on-panel appearance was in The Ultimates #8 (November 2002), created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch.
Chitauri in their natural form appear to be large and reptilian - however anything else is unclear since Chitauri have been mainly shown to mimic the human form.
The Chitauri army plays a major opponent to The Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was led by Loki. Chitauri also makes an appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode "F.Z.Z.T." where firefighters from a small town had visited NY after the Chitauri invasion and discovered a Chitauri helmet and brought it back home as a souvenir. However it was carrying an alien virus in it that slowly killed off those that were exposed to it through static electricity.
The Movieverse version of the alien race has been shown in the Earth-616 mainstream Nova comics.
Other appearances of Chitauri have been in Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Ultimate Avengers Films.
