Chemistry is a Mulder/Krycek story by Louise Wu. The story won Best Romance and Best Hurt/Comfort in the 2001 Lisa e Krysa Awards.

Summary: Forgiveness doesn't come in a day. After a sexual encounter changes Mulder and Krycek, both struggle to let go of the past. A high angst love story, with plenty of plot twists and hot sex as our boys work through real-world relationship problems.

Recs and Reviews

I like Louise's stories, I really do, although her experimental style throws me a bit. She likes to use 1st person POV and sometimes the emotions it's intended to convey don't feel very deep or real to me. Still, I have to admit that I was utterly captivated by both "Chemistry Book" and "Echo Lane" and came to visit her website daily in the hopes of a new update when the stories were posted. She portrays very well the various levels of attraction and hostility between Mulder and Krycek and their inability for a long time to let go of past hurts and achieve some sort of middle ground where they are no longer ruled by the Consortium's influences on their lives. Addictive.[1]

Alex finally gives in to his obsession with Mulder. Completely unprepared for Alex*s advances, Mulder is blindsided and finds himself participating in a hot one-night stand with Alex. Thus begins a wonderfully angsty and meaningful relationship that spans years and many obstacles.

This is a great story. Everybody is in-character. Mulder has no illusions about the things Krycek has done. His struggle with himself is believable. I particularly love Louise*s Krycek ... he doesn*t suddenly transform into a good person, so much as he consciously sculps his behavior to be the kind of man Mulder can accept. Scully and Skinner also behave in a (mostly) believable manner when they discover the relationship.

I couldnt put this story down. Enjoy....[2]

Well...they've chemistry.... R: I don't think that I've ever seen Alex described like that before. He was so human. And, maybe I'm giving myself too much credit here, but he reminds me of me. Mulder/Krycek *****[3]

Yay for M/K relationship fic! You know the drill, get `em together and try to work out the problems. The journey is a rocky one, which considerable angst, but it never goes overboard and it`s definetly worth it.[4]

Hi, this is the first time I've posted or recommended anything, so I hope I do it right.

I am re-reading this for the third time and thought I should recommend it. I had a quick look back through the index but it doesn't seem to have been mentioned before. It is at

http://lzl.dreamhost.com/Stories/Chem/Chemistry.html

which brings you to the warnings and the index. Do heed warnings - I'll say more about them at the bottom of the page, so those who want to avoid spoilers can. It diverges from canon after "The Red and the Black". This is a long story and Louise provides a .zip file of all three books - much appreciated.

I love this story for a lot of reasons. It is long, which I like - book length really. And there is angst galore, throughout, and hurt/comfort of the emotional sort. Both Mulder and Krycek know that getting together is a bad idea, but they just can't help themselves. They try to convince themselves at first that it is just sex, but slowly they have to acknowledge that there are deeper feelings involved. Krycek, especially, has always tried to deny and ignore that he has feelings and his slow realisation that he loves Mulder is very painful for him. Also, both Mulder and Krycek read like guys to me in this story.

The storyline arises out of the clash between Krycek's world and Mulder's and is very nail biting at times. The sex scenes are hot, particulary one near the middle where Mulder and Krycek can't even be together but still manage to get it off (and no, it's not phone sex!). If you like Mulder/Krycek, I really do recommend this story.

Regards,

Undinae

ps. I have put some spoilers below with my warnings. I'll make them as vague as possible but they do give some of the plot away. However, you don't have to worry about anything really horrendous in this story, there is no character death or anything like that.

Bad, bad things happen to Krycek midway through the story, including quite a lot of violence and rape more than once, but he is a tough guy and with Mulder's help he pulls through. Some of the violence is at Mulder's hands but the rape is not. Some of the rapes are described, but not in too graphic a manner. Keep in mind, as well, that Krycek does not start out as a particularly nice guy in this story. This is canon Krycek, a killer, and that is described.

Also, Mulder gets badly injured at one point but is not permanently injured. In fact he is walking around a week later, if with difficulty.

Even if you would not normally read a story with these things in them, this story is worth it.[5]

Louise Wu rocks the par-tay! She is a fantastic author and I admire her to the marrow of my bones.[6]
